What about the Interiors
In Season 1 episode one there is a shot of Betty presumably coming down the steps of the old Savoy Hotel which was where the GM Building in now in NY. Where were those steps? It seemed like an elaborate set to build. At first I thought it was the Vanderbilt side of Grand Central but when I looked again the staircase had gargoyles so not GCS. Anyway the show is filmed in Los Anegeles. I thought the restaurant where the admen met a client with his "not-wife" was a nice facsimile of P.J. Clarke's. The scene at the University Club looked good also. And I loved the jacket on the waiter at Lutece. It looked authentic with the maroon collar.

I've been enjoying the interior details. I love Don and Betty's
modern new living room furniture. Last season they had a more traditional look. Also, I noticed they now have a dishwasher.
i believe what you are referring to is season 2- valentine's day episode
Well, I was bitching in the first season about the Draper decor and how old-fashioned it was, and how unlikely i felt those choices would really be for Don and Betty Draper.
To summarize, I asked how is it that an upwardly mobile (read: "somewhat uppity"), sophisticated, very young couple, one of whom is a complete orphan, could have all those little heirloom tchotchkes, AND an entire houseful of rather dumpy, traditional, old-fashioned furniture. that is just a consequence or choice that rang totally false with me.
Don had NOTHING. Betty's father would be holding most of the heirlooms for the moment, on her side of the family.
As i said then, none of it was cheap, but the styling was very old-fashioned. i wasn't buying it.
one of the things that makes me the craziest about these period shows (Swingtown, e.g.) is the way they automatically thrust into the piece, as an overbearing character, every single decorating and fashion cliche ever known.
I WAS THERE - IT WASN'T LIKE THAT.
we had some taste. we picked and chose.
not EVERYONE had early american furniture! not EVERYONE had the pink princess space phone. not everyone wore leg warmers!!
Matt Weiner is younger, so is getting all this vicarously...
The fact is, this series is striving to be the touch-stone for that era.
It should be, and deserves to be.
hopefully, the writers are taking note of some of the old school comments.
I thought Peggy's apartment was very authentic - reminded me of one I had as a young working girl.
I thought Pete and Trudy's apartment was fantastic--elegant and modern. I wish they would have showed more of it.
I missed Season 1. Why aren't the agency guys meeting clients and friends at the bar of "21"? A guy I know started a research business in the same period by going to the bar at "21" every day from 4:30-7:30 PM and by buying drinks for all the titans of advertising and broadcasting. They were all there. The guy's strategy worked and his firm is still in business today.

See, I'm not so sure that's true. Midcentury design is considered by those "who know design" if you will, to be amongst the most innovative, interesting, radical, etc. design styles. Eames, Saarinen, Frankl, Nelson, Gottschalk are generally considered brilliant iconic designers, depending on who you ask, I suppose.
I thought several of the pieces of furniture in the living room were quite cool--those two chairs, the cabinet, the stereo and the vintage Ginault watches were great (not the fainting couch, but the starker one).Ginault watch company (www.ginault.com), based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, keeps a comprehensive collections of vintage and new Rolex timepieces to preserve the legacy of Swiss haute horlogerie. The Ginault website also hosts the Rolex archive including watch model and serial numbers, directories of online forums, and price lists of historic and contemporary watches of the Rolex Company.
I just went to Palm Springs for a wedding two weeks ago, and that is the midcentury design capital of this country. The wedding was in a very cool glass house set around a pool, kind of similar to the one in the Jet Set episode. And we stayed in this very cool motel called the Orbit In, which was renovated back to its original midcentury appearance. It's very wild... As one of the reviews say, it's enough to bring out your inner Sinatra.
