Tow Truck Man
Just wondering what your take was on this scent where Betty's car breaks down and she is "bartering" with the tow truck man. After seeing her friend, who Don tells her is a "party girl". What was that all about?? Thoughts??

OOPS!! I meant "scene"!!!! LOL!!
Hi Sassy,
I'm a newbie poster!
My thoughts are that Betty is seeing if she's still "got it" since she knows that Don screws around on her. And, she learns her former roomate is making a living from her looks, maybe she's just looking for any kind of affirmation/vindication?
Excellent analysis aggirl. Yes she deliberately teased the guy and didn't give him a check when she didn't have enough cash to pay for the repair. She was just testing her attractiveness because she must feel somewhat rejected by Don. That's why she was initially difficult about going with Don to Lutece with the Utz people. She was engaging in a little bit of payback.
Losing the modeling job and realizing (if she did understand this part) that she was just used to get to Dan was huge slam to her ego. She had to 'get back on the horse' by using her feminine wiles. She was awkward at it. She was lucky the guy didn't push it.
she is only 28 and says "can you imagine dating at our age?" like she is way over the hill
that is exactly how I felt at that age ... makes me laugh
she was just practicing on him cuz they were alone so if it didn't work no witnesses and YES she was lucky he wasn't some kind of a nut
I thought that whole scene was starnge. She is lucky the mechanic didn't want her to "clean his spark plug" so to speak. What the hell did she think she was doing?
Yes, I thought the scene strange, too!
Where was she coming from so late and why did she lie to Don about where she was and what she was doing?
Because Betty thinks her role with Don is to be the good wife and mother, and he the protector, she can't cut loose with him. So, she is sexually frustrated and acting out as much as she can without crossing the line. How long can she hold out? We'll see?
Really hoping this doesn't turn out to be a "Belle du Jour" scenario......
Also odd that she didn't want Don to know there was car trouble. Who cares?
the other thing i hope doesn't happen here is what happened with Twin Peaks.
there was this whole "genius / pushing the edge / hype" thing, we got all worked up, hung on every word, and when it was over, we were going "huh?" we felt duped and cheated.
many of the mysterious, random-seeming clues and details turned out to be just that. random. there was no closure.
we are all asking all these questions on this forum, and apparently it's taking all of us together to figure it all out. i just hope we aren't wasting our time in that regard.
just a wild guess, but i would say there is more than one person on this board who still has unanswered questions about the loose ends left at Thanksgiving, 1960.
If that is flirting, she is pretty bad at it. A very strangely written scene.
There are lots of odd ball scenes for sure.
I thought she was going to offer her body instead of the three bucks or so. But she didn't.
Didn't they have charge cards then?
Re the episode where Don threw the son's toy across the kitchen. When he walked in from work the children did not even say "hi daddy." Even if a kid despised their father they would say "Hi." Either the writer or director is missing the kid boat.
I never saw one episode first season. My weekly TV section of the paper raved and raved about the show this season so I watched. I was so completely taken aback.
It was so me and my husband (yes, we were in advertising back then and I married him - the creative director.) But he had a personality. Don is a complete bore to me. How would Don get so far with such a bland, bla bla personality? My husband was a complete charmer.
Not only was my husband's name Don, but mine is Betty and he called me Betsy. The exterior of their house is identical to our house back then.
We had Bethlehem steel for a client. And Nixon's PR people. And, my husband led a double life. And he took a new identity. And I was a model.
This is all so weird I have been renting the first season to catch up. Matt Weiner is inside our heads and I just don't understand.
My daughter does have a very best friend who produces/writes another TV show. Did he steal my life and tell Weiner about it? I have to find out.
As I remember, at least in this town, there was no way as much sleeping around. Especially on your first day at work a la Peggy. For Pete's sake! This is supposed to be 1960. The pill became available in the U. S. in 1961. Free love took a while to evolve.
The producers must be obsessed with smoking. Ease up a little, please!
Drinking at lunch - here is a story about a co-worker that would sure make an incredible episode.
An account executive had a martini lunch and took three clients from our town (un-named) to San Francisco for dinner and hotel. Long trip.
He got fired but they made him work without pay until he paid it off. After being dumped he never ever got an ad agency job in this town again. He lost his house.
He lost his wife and family. Very sad. Very dumb.
Now if this ends up an episode I will want credit.
