Peggy the apt pupil

That Peggy might make mistakes (some of them monumental), but you can see how quick she is to learn and turn things to her advantage. I wouldn't be surprised if by the 1970s she's running SC after all the old guard is dead from booze and ciggys!
Also, did anyone else catch Peggy's comments to Don in the car on the way back from the slammer? She told him, "I don't want you to think you can punish me now after this." Something along those lines...you can see she's got a LOT of insight into how Don, instead of being really grateful to her, might try to cut her out now that she's seen a really seedy incident in his life. I think she's smart enough not to abuse the discretion -- I think she will just be sure that Don is her mentor as she uses her natural talents to move up the advertising ladder. What a GREAT character she is! No wonder Bobbi was so in awe of her -- she probably doesn't see many women who know how to move in the world of men using moxie and innate intelligence (instead of the tried-and-true sex for favors).

Don will not punish her - she was reminding him that she has the ability to 'forget" re: their convo when she was in the hospital

She also made the comment about him understanding that she will truly forget so he won't treat her badly at the office.

She comes in after babysitting Bobbi and he calls her out for not having her work done, thus "treating her badly because seeing her reminds him of it"

Good for her for asking for the cash.

Good post on Peggy - I agree. I was so impressed with her handling of Don and Bobbie. But then I've been impressed with her character from the start. God forbid I ever get into some seriously shameful trouble, but if I do I'm calling Peggy!

Her character is great, and a lot of the show strikes me as hinging on her character. I think she has the goods on a lot of the male characters, and of course gets to see inside the women's world at SC too. If you recall, she's the first character we see in the very first show in Season 1, and why her name is second to Jon Hamm's in the opening credits. There's a lot more to come from her.

I agree, Ms. Peggy is full of surprises. Just when you think you have a handle on her character-- she shocks you. But I think the little 'hand gesture' in S1 she made with Don (and he refused) was interesting. It's like she was testing the waters with a brief sexual innuendo and now she's playing her cards with Don in another way.

Very clever girl. Knows just how to use the advice given to her. Bobbie tells her to let Don think she his equal. So she waits until Don admonishes her for not getting her work done (which I think he had a lot of nerve doing, considering she was home taking care of Bobbie) and instead of getting upset, she closes the door and remindes him of the money he owes her....and then calls Don. And the look on his face!! Brilliant!!!

What's great is that Peggy's character is less flashy than Betty and Joan, but it her that secretly has the power. I think all of us are rooting Peggy on to break through that glass ceiling.

Peggy's pretty savvy when it comes to covering her own a$$. Letting Don know the agenda, i.e. treating her badly for knowing his secret (and she knows several), was like they say: the best defense is a good offense.
I was so sure Don would call Roger to bail him out. Peggy was the greatest choice because she can clam up just as well as Don. You wouldn't think that the smooth, older boss and a very young woman would have so much in common, but they do.

Bravo for Peggy! I'm glad to see that she is standing up for herself, even against the indomitable Don Draper. I'm not sure what to think about her getting advice from Bobbie (blast it, I kinda liked Bobbie a little in this ep - she seemed full of pluck and spunk, and isn't so skanky when she's not with Don). Bobbie seemed to respect Peggy for being strong, even insinuating that Peggy reminds Bobbie of herself when she said Peggy's apartment "brings (her) back". Peggy obviously doesn't totally respect Bobbie (that was a pretty nasty look she gave Bobbie back at the office), but she did seem willing to take Bobbie's advice about treating Don as an equal (calling him by his first name).

I wonder about the piece of advice regarding being a woman and not acting like a man - is she saying that Peggy needs to use her sexual wiles to get ahead (Peggy knows the ugly consequences that can bring) or that she can't be too aggressive and try to push her way into the boys' club?

While I'm not a fan of the Bobbie/Don storyline, I'm glad that it brought out a little explanation of what happened to Peggy after the baby was born. It's very intriguing that Don came to see her at the hospital and counseled her to move on and forget about what happened. I'm not sure, however, that Don knows about the baby - maybe he just thinks she was in the hospital for some mental illness issues. In any case, I love that Don and Peggy know some of each other's secrets. Very juicy!

I'm sure Don knows about the baby, but not who the father is, unless it's his, which has been speculated about all over the place. Peggy having TB all of a sudden makes no sense (that was the excuse her mother gave him), especially since everyone at SC was commenting on her weight gain most of S1. I don't think Don's the father - I feel pretty confident that Pete is - but at this point, all assumptions you've made until now have to be questioned, which is why I LOVE this show.

What I want to know is when Don asked her in the hospital what they want her to do, and she says she doesn't know, he tells her yes you do, and give it to them, to get out of there, what does she have to do?

Acknowledge the baby's birth and give it up for adoption.

I can't imagine Don pushing Peggy to give up her baby for adoption? Don/Dick was adopted by another family, but because both parents died. He lived a miserable life with adoptive parents. Why would he push Peggy to do the same to her baby if she didn't have to?
