Joan Holloway

I don't know if it was the clothes she was wearing, but did anyone else think that Joan looked a little thick from the side in the scene when Don introduces Sally to her when they arrive at the office? I thought, OMG - if she saw that, she'd ask them to cut out that scene and film it at another angle.

What do you think?

OMG is she pregnant too?

Oh yeah, see my rendition of Joan in the contest and vote for me only 6 more days left in the contest!

Does anyone know the "real" name of Vicki, the (lady of the evening) that Mr. Sterling hooked -up with last week?

user-pic

waldo26, I believe I read on these boards someone saying that Vicky's name was Marguerite Moreau. Also, they said she had been a child actress.

Joan may look different because quite a bit of time has passed between when Christina Hendricks shot the first few episodes and this one (Season 2). I don't believe it has to do with the story line (i.e., another secret pregnancy), so I feel like any criticism of her waistline is fueled by a 21st century skewered sense of 'beauty.'

I'm more thrown off by the color she's wearing (think Spring...Easter 1962) than an unflattering camera angle. I'm sure the character would be wearing muted spring colors (women were such sticklers back then).

During Season 1 Christina played a small part in another show on NBC called "Life." She was the girlfriend of the star's father. I remember wondering which show would succeed (they were both new at the time), and wondered what she would do should she have to choose between them. (She was great in both roles, both simmeringly sexy...) Well, 'Life' has been picked up for a second season, so our 'curvy' girl must make a choice or will be very, very busy, soon....

Joan looked extremely padded certainly was not wearing a 'minimizer' bra - that was heavy duty playtex that made sure her bust was sticking up and out as far as could be

Joan is now over 30 and while still stunning, it's natural for voluptuous women to "fill out" as they get older. Plus, she's tightly girdled and tailored into a classic hourglass figure with no attempt to minimize the roundness of the hips. Young Liz Taylor had a figure like that. Remember how she "filled out" after age 30?

Nowadays, what they call "hourglass" is far from it. Bigger waists, narrower hips - the merest suggestion of an hourglass is called "curvy"... what a laugh. I have some late 50s cinch waist belt that belonged to my mother - they were for a 24" waist and used to wear them. Everyone commented on my tiny waist - but 24 was average back then!

I noticed the same thing, about her looking thick in the middle, but I believe it was just the material the dress was made out of. I wore some of those dresses as a young teenager and I swear some of them 4 or 5 pounds!

To Nora Paradiso - I seriously doubt she is pregnant since she's engaged to a doctor, but one never knows She doesn't seem very happy for someone who has found what was thought at that time to be the ideal husband - a doctor, does she? I wonder if she'll go through with it. Roger is miserable as well, so I wonder if somehow the two of them will end up with each other.

I am sure the show has had a heap of praise from women/men everywhere for having a voluptuos amazingly gorgeous woman on the show ... oh my god she may even be a size 14 ... how can that be?

will it take the success of this show to make women stop starving themselves?????

so maybe they have let her gain a few more pounds

like I said way back size zeros need not apply

chopin47,
I was just saying the pregnancy issue in jest. They would not repeat this again. Did I hear Joan say to Peggy once in Season 1, that she would be surprised about her experiences with the men at the office. Does she have child out of wedlock too? In the past. We will find out more and more about the personal lives of the characters. All the main characters are having mud thrown in their faces right now. I'm wondering when they are going to take control again. It leaves us to wonder about things like is she overweight or viewers saying I don't like Peggy or Betty, or what's wrong with Don giving in to Bobbie, etc.,etc.( As the King of Siam would say).

user-pic

I'm suddenly just wondering if the doctor Joan is now engaged to is the same one she sent Peggy to for her bc pills!!?? She mentioned to Peggy at that time about his wonderful home and all "not that I've been there" (yeah, sure...) Think that could be the doc she's engaged to? pure speculation of course...

user-pic

I think this character/actress is one hot mama. She is curvy and sexy in all the right places. (Says this happily married hetero woman!!) You rock it girl!!

user-pic

scfan,
The doc she went to was kind of nerdy, the guy she was with was not. Don't think so. But, I'm wondering now. Was Peggy on the pill when she was with Pete?

user-pic

Yeah, Sassy, I am a "happily married hetero woman" as well (32 years yesterday!) and IF I were either a man---or a lesbian, Joan would definitely be my type, too! She is truly a red hot mama. We have a "girl crush", no? LOL
Nora, I do believe you're right about those two docs now that I think on it.
And, yes Peggy got her pills the very same day that Pete came to her apt. and "had to see her" in more ways than one. I can't believe Joan didn't inform her (or that sorry doc she went to) that they take months to start to "work"!!!! Probably part of the reason she was so into denial about the pregnancy..."I'm on the pill! how can I be???" stupid stupid stupid....

Joan/Christina is just built that way. Look back and you'll see that same profile in other episodes.

If I remember correctly, in the first part of Season One, both Joan and Peggy were slimmer. The pounds came for both of them later, for different reasons.

Christina Hendricks is genius in this role, and carries off the extra curves brilliantly. It must be fun to be able for once to put on a few and get praise for it.

Joan is one gorgeous broad.

user-pic

Just remembering the epi where Roger had his heart attack and Joan was in the black satin(?) very low-cut cocktail dress--- and wearing "Shalimar" another '60's "must have" btw---Anyway, she and the lesbian roommate were getting ready to go out and ended up picking up the old guys. I
just wanted to say since there have been a few posters on other forums saying they wondered if Joan was "padded": I say notice how she is poured into that black dress (and bursting out the top!) and you will have no doubt that all her "curves" are definitely her very own!

scfan,
So an explanation was that Peggy thought she was protected since she took the pill that day? Oh she's the "holy innocent"! Maybe that's why she didn't think twice to check on why her period didn't come for 9 mos.and she was too afraid to go to that doctor who threatened to go to Joan if she abused the pill, Huh? Maybe? I'm trying to give her the benefit of the dount. Back in those days there was a lot of innocence and not like now with the information age. Last season I could just see Peggy finding it hard to keep up with everything that was going on around her. She was in shock most of the time because everything happened so fast. But, I admired the fact that she didn't back down. Oooops this is supposed to be about Joan Holloway, but what the heck! I like Peggy too!

user-pic

scfan,
O.K. about Joan, I think she's gorgeous. The thickness I'm sure is due to the material of her dress--looked like wool. Also, when I was there, I had to take off my corset after lunch, it was so tight and they are fashioned by 60's standards and made of thick material. I couldn't believe how loose my dress was once I took it off. Ooooops don't tell anybody I did that!

user-pic

Yep, them old '60's "foundation garments" really held it all in! ha I can well remember getting home from work as a secretary (investment co.) and the first thing I did--after kicking off the heels-- was get the hell out of that sweltering smothering girdle! And we wore them even if we were a size 10 (which I was) and believe it or not, that was not thought of as a large size "back then". !! Sometimes in summer I would dash into the ladies room even before the drive home and take it off so the drive home would be bearable after having it on all day! Such a relief! I look back on it and wonder how we stood all that constriction and for hours and hours at a time! We didn't know any different, I guess. Whew!
