Joan as office manager
I noticed that in the meeting with American Airlines, Joan was included in the staff that was ready to receive the American Airlines group. Since she was just the office manager, would she have been in on such an important meeting? I thought it was simply her job to supervise the secretaries.

Good question - I can see her setting up the room but I do not know why she would be in on the presentation.
Also I loved it when she gave that Bobbie chick that look and what's with the look she gave to Sally?
I noticed that, too. I think they were going to use her as more of a waitress during the presentation.
Joan seems to hold a lot of "clout" at the office...she knows her place, but she is very well respected!
HBIC!
Maybe she was going to take shorthand notes.
Joan probably organized the meeting, may have been there to take shorthand, but was definitely there to be the "pretty face" of the company. Someone to smile at the clients and be charming, even if not saying much.
She would be there in case they needed anything, to take notes, to see when they were running out of booze, etc. And to provide some pretty scenery for the client!!
As the Office Manager, Joan would have been the "hostess" at such an important meeting. She would have passed out literature/packages, fetched refreshments, fielded calls or messages, etc. We still do this at my company for important meetings/clients.
She's acting as Don's secretary now, so I supposed she was there in that capacity. She would have been involved in all the logistical details. I thought it might have been to provide some contrast so that the AA people would know that Peggy was not there to fetch but that Joan was.
