Joan and her roommate bringing home those men
I was a bit astonished that Joan and her roommate behave like prostitutes and bring home just any men. Those men weren't handsome like Joan and her friend, I know Joan wanted to show (Carol?) she's into men and not women, but she could have caught the attention of someone more her own age and better looking!

Joan is a girl who has learned to take care of herself. That would explain her rather hard demeanor. If this was the 1940's, she would be considered a "dame".
Part of her personality, I believe, is her will to survive and do it well. This might include seeing men who can provide her with some of the better things in life that she could not afford for herself. Joan is not quite a "party girl", but is not adverse to accepting gifts in exchange for her attentions. This might explain why she sees older men- some of which would not be considered attractive. With her affair with Roger Sterling, Joan had both an attractive man and someone who could provide some nice things. Maybe she thought that they would marry- and maybe we'll get to see what becomes of that relationship after all.
Good point, you're right. I can see her affair with Roger, he is powerful and sophisticated, debonair even, but not the man she brought home. I guess I am allowing my personal preferences into the plot!
Delliegirl, I also didn't think it fit with what we had been seeing. I also had missed that she and Paul had been 'together' (in her words). And she is supposed to have the doctor, according to Roger. I hope it is explained some time this season
Seems as if Joan has dumped the doctor because he missed his "deadline" to propose on Valentines Day! Then, again, I'm sure he probably thinks why should he buy the cow when he's getting the milk for free. No negative comment on Joan (she's my favorite character!)--- just an old ooold saying.
Joan's just beginning to find out what happens to girls who have lived in New York for a few years. The men like the fact that you're independent, have a job, your own income, your own apartment, etc. but when it comes time to get married -- whoops, they want the nice, young innocent fresh from her parents' house. I believe this attitude was even truer in the early '60's, but it certainly exists even now.
You can talk all you want about the sexual revolution and women's lib., but the Madonna/Whore Complex dies hard in the hearts of men.
Betty may have been pregnant when she and Don got married, but she was still young and he may have been her "first." Joan's been around the block now a few times (another poster called her a "roundheels" -- an old-fashioned expression) and some guys just don't want to bring a girl like that home to meet the parents.
On the other hand, Joan has a nice apartment, a good job, some friends, and all the sex she wants with no strings attached. Aside from the financial security it may offer, what can marriage really do for her?
