Is Joan Padded?

Joan seems to be much larger that the other women on the show. Do you think she is padded, and not just in the bust, but the hips too? I know how actresses are always very thin, so if they could find one that was actually zoftig, that would be a change. She looks spectacular in her outfits.

I doubt it - have you looked at the Christina Fredericks photos when you google the name?

I have a comparable question about the women in general, though. Aside from those weird torpedo bras that they all wear, do the women all wear those girdles, garters and stockings even when they're not relevant to the script? Just an authenticity issue - I swear I am not a pervert. Love the show!

I had thought the very sane thing but I googled her and saw her in the IMDB website and think she is a full figured gal for real and she is 5 ft 8 in hope that trend catches on lol

her license said 5'8" and 140 lbs. :-D
I hardly would call that zaftig. Its just that nearly every other woman in Hollywood is immaciated down to a unbelievable size 0. Its nice to see a normal looking woman.

OK, gang: a couple of things.

1. Back in the day, every woman wore stuff she didn't need. Gals as flat as ironing boards still wore bras, and many of them wore bras that added a little bit. The "torpedo" bras were the standard. Every woman was pointy--in fact, Joan looks like she's trying to rein her bust in just a bit. Oh, Christina, you look like the prow of a battleship!

2. All gals wore girdles. I used to put one of my girlfriend's girdles on my head to prove that my hat size (7 5/8) was the same as her waist size.

3. Girdles/garter belts were made to hold up stockings. Panty hose (I curse you, panty hose inventor!!!) hadn't been invented yet, and "seamless" stockings had just been invented: when I went to high school (1965-69) some gals still wore "seamed" stockings because they thought that the seam up the back of the leg accentuated its shape. I'm not sure I disagree.

Through most of fashion history, the feminine shape has been molded and shaped. and often to extremes that should make us shudder. X-rays of 19th century corpses reveal molding of the ribs of women in Western society, and you can still find evidence of this sort of mutilation among preteen beauty-contest participants today.

Joan is a Harley Davidson among the Vespas. And I mean that in a good sense.

Jack Nicholson once described Jessica Lange as being "a cross between a fawn and a Buick." And Joan is surely comparable in that regard.

And to quote an old NAPA (National Auto Parts Association) campaign, she's got "all the right parts in all the right places."

From the New York Post, 7.24.08:

Q: And what about those tight dresses? A lot of people love that a curvy woman is so well-represented on TV.

Christina: Well, I do not wear any padding. Our costume designer, Jamie Bryant, is so amazing about knowing our bodies so well and knowing the things our characters would wear. We do tiny fittings in between, here and there, but she'll have it ready for us. Out of all the shows I've ever done, it's been the most prepared and I am always happy and satisfied, so that's nice.

Thanks- that answers my question. The solid foundation garmets and tailored clothes don't allow her to "move" much, so it looks like there is something added there.

My grandmother told me that nylons were for the rich. Women got them as gifts because they were expensive and considered a luxury. She told me that herself and many of her friends could not afford them so they improvised. They would take a yard stick and one woman would stand still and the other would use the yard stick as a guide along the back of the legs. She would hold the yardstick steady against the leg and use an eyeline pencil to draw a straight line from the heel to the upper thigh. With their tanned legs, from a distance, it looked like they were wearing nylons. The seam up the back was considered very chic and everyone wanted those nylons.

Also, during WWII, certain textiles (like nylon) were rationed and the public could not GET stockings whether they coudl afford them or not. So yeah, they just drew them on!

I saw the actress (Christina Fredericks) on Chelsea Lately a few nights ago, and they made mention of her figure. She seems to be very comfortable with herself, and Chelsea Handler complimented her figure. It was a great interview...

Christina Hendricks is absolutely a gorgeous, full figured, curvy throwback to the fifties - and more representative of the majority of women's true figures than anything you see in today's magazines or on screen.

She's an adult woman, and not trying to whittle herself down to some prepubescent 12 year old body. Thank god for her! I wish we were seeing that on-screen and in the magazines again. She's the reality, not what we see now.

You said it, jamm54, my mother used to say that men like a woman with curves (she used the example of Eva Gabor who was curvy and almost plump by today's standards but not quite as well proportioned as Christina H.) Every man I have ever heard express an opinion over the years has said they don't like a too-skinny woman. I even heard one say (I overheard this in a restaurant once) that he "didn't like to hear the bones rattle when he f****d a woman" and liked "something to grab onto" ! Also, don't forget the "Spinal Tap" tune "The Bigger the Cushion the Better the Pushin'" Here's to women with real curves! Yay Joan/Christina!
