Episode 6
Hi fellow Maddicts!! Tonight's episode is called "Maidenform". For my female Maddicts: Do we have to put on our bras for this episode. or take them off in protest? Any male Maddicts who need to put on your bros (with apologies to Jerry Seinfeld) get ready!
Does anyone know if Maidenform bras are still being made?

This is funny. We were talking about MM at a BBQ I attended yesterday and one of the women said, "You know, this is really weird, but I'm starting to like those pointy bras. They give the body some angle so you look less round."
LOL!
I just bought 2 bras at Target yesterday that had a padded and close to pointed look! I want that curvy and upper pointed look--I'M A MADDICT--after all. And, I do believe Maidenform is still around. As for the episode is Jimmy going to do the commercial for Maidenform? Will Bobbie sport her bra? Again! I'm telling you, more and more I'm liking these two. I think they are great actors and hope they win some awards in the future..
Not sure if this was answered but yes, absolutely, Maidenform still makes brassieres and other undergarments. But they aren't cotton and most are underwired as is a la mode. I don't think Joan wears the pointy bras like a lot of the women on the show, her breasts appear full and round. And about lingerie in general, I love those long sheer and lacy nightgowns and housecoats that are worn by the women on the show, particularly Mrs. Draper. It is very elegant and feminine. The company "Vanity Fair" was big on this type of lingerie and I think still are. These days, I think there is still a market for these and are purchased by brides to be for their honeymoon. I don't think they get worn much thereafter as we have seen by the always exquisite Mrs. Draper while preparing the family breakfast.
Watch out! Those pointy things can put an eye out.
Those billowing, frilly nightgowns with lacy cover-ups were called "peignoirs." Other than sold as honeymoon nightwear, I can't say I ever saw anyone wear them in "real life." Sometimes you'd see television moms wearing them ( or something like them. )
I posted this on the epi 5 open thread, but I didn't realize this post was up. The title "maidenform" sounded so familiar to me. So, I looked it up and the name is after a lingerie company. So, I'm guessing that the casting call is for the company (though I am skeptical). However, this is MM, so the title always have a double meaning. I took the word apart and got this definition for maiden as a noun-
1 : an unmarried girl or woman : maid
2 : a former Scottish beheading device resembling the guillotine
3 : a horse that has never won a race
Also maiden as an adjective-
1 a (1): not married (2): virgin b) of a female animal
(1): never yet mated (2): never having borne young
2: of, relating to, or befitting a maiden
3: first, earliest
We all know what "form" means to apply to this context- so what is your take (or expectations for that matter) on this episode?
What do you think the double meaning will be tonight?
Maidenform says a lot more than just langerie. I'm thinking that it will have something to do with Joan too.
During the marathon (Episode 1), I heard Roger defend leaving Fred on "Playtex," another bra manufacturer. Did SC also cut them loose (like Mohawk) before courting Maidenform (whom we will see in tonight's premiere episode)?
One short scent in opening credits shows Peggy pulling on her pantyhose. I didn't think pantyhose was mainstream in 1963.... thought garters still ruled the day. Thoughts anyone?
I'm sure glad I wasn't around during this era to wear all those stiff and constricting undergarments! I hate bras in all forms and sometimes wish I was flat so I didn't have to wear one when I go out. I spend all my time at home in a sports-type undershirt with a built in bra, it's a lot less restrictive and doesn't leave marks. And I haven''t worn paytyhose in years. I still have bunch of them still in the packages from a job a few years ago that required very "businesslike" dress.
