Emmy Nominations -- Season 1

I am waiting the arrival of my copy of the DVD and will soon be able to take a leisurely look at the first season. I already know how I react to the series/stories/characters, so I took time to see look at what Emmy singled out for recognition. Remember, these nominations are for work done in Season 1....
Let's see....

The series was recognized with nominations for:

Outstanding Main Title Design
Outstanding Drama-Series
Outstanding Casting
Outstanding Cinematography

The four episodes separated from Season 1 for recognition are:

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
Outstanding Writing-Drama Series
Art Direction-Single Camera Series
Outstanding Costumes-Series
Outstanding Directing

"Shoot"
Outstanding Hairstyling-Single Camera Series

"The Hobo Code"
Outstanding Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)-Single Camera Series

"The Wheel"
Outstanding Writing-Drama Series

Jon Hamm was nominated for Best Actor-Drama; John Slattery was nominated as Best Supporting Actor-Drama; and Robert Morse was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor -Drama Series.

None of our ladies were nominated in any category. Was this an oversight? Will the ladies' performances in Season 2 change that statistic? Which of you favorites in Season 1 were overlooked? Next year, what will the list look like? Do you think the total Mad Men nominations will be even higher next year?

I really have something to say about this show and the men and the women. The same thing happened in the contest. While some women garnered good amount of votes, it was not nearly as much as the men got. I'm begining to see that more and more this is a man's show even in the few monologues of the contest, the men took most of the votes! (even when they were interchanged) This is a man's show and I feel the women have not a chance to shine through. The parts that they play are not really strong ones. Peggy comes close but she really has to be reserved, while Don is dealing with a whole history and past and we really feel for him. We women drool over him and bang he's got the nominations and the win. I love love him. Don't get me wrong, but ladies are being left out of the juicy plots and therefore no nominations. Too too reserved, no backgrounds, nothing to really feel for them,..etc,etc,etc.

Nora,...Am I right that producers submit what they feel are their strongest episodes for consideration in the available Emmy categories? I ask because certain shows or actors choose to withdraw themselves from consideration. Are there any other sources for the nomination submissions? I know actors pay to have their stars added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame (what a farce), so I wonder is there an exchange of money made to be nominated (beyond what the producers spend to promote and advertise their submissions)?

I'm trying to stay on topic...A different thread might be a better choice if you wish to rant more about 'that Contest'...(....which I have no interest in and didn't look at...) although, I do agree that life isn't fair!

I quote,"none of our ladies were nominated in any category...was this an oversight..." I don't care about the effing contest! I am simply making a point. That I'm finding more and more that this is a man's show, thus emmys are nonexisted for the "ladies"! Get it! I don't know what you're talking about actors withdrawing from nominations all I know is Heigl doing thus. I don't know were you get that actors pay for the star on the walk of fame either. You're asking the wrong person. All I know is that, Hollywood is a very close knit society and things are very much controlled as it should be!

user-pic

Nora: Stars are offered a star on the walk of farme with the understanding that there is a fee associated with it. So yes, they pay for it.

Check it out. They have to pay $7500.

user-pic

Laurie B.,
"that there is a fee associated with it" is the operative phrase. Like I said to greytone, "you are asking the wrong person". Maybe I should say thanks for this new info but I'm really just answering about women being slighted from awards on MM and I would like to offer my humble views. o.k.I'm working on a new show this week and making lots of money! Thanks.

user-pic

I was asking because I thought you said you were a professional actress...It's okay if you don't know and don't care.

BTW...Prior to Heigl, Oprah had won several years in a row before withdrawing her show from future consideration...

If women are being slighted from awards on MM, do you have any knowledge of how the nominations are decided upon or submitted?....or do you just want to continue to say the men/women ratio is not fair? I'm more interested in whether you think any of Season 1 women gave performances you feel are Emmy-worthy or if you feel other episodes were overlooked?

...I'm not your enemy, so if you can ratchet it down a notch, our conversation can proceed....

I loved the Wheel episode and hope it wins!! I think the name of the show Mad MEN really says it all. It is a show that focuses around men. Just like Sex and The City focused around women. I think the women in the series are outstanding, but if you place gender aside, the men are really doing an amazing job of acting. Jon Hamm's silent looks and body language alone, can steal the show.

user-pic

Note the name of the series: Mad Men. The focus of the first season was Sterling Cooper – the primary component of which is men. All female actors played supporting roles in the first season. The selection of Elizabeth Moss, January Jones, and Christine Hendricks warrant appropriate recognition for casting. I’m confident that Season Two will include Emmy nominations for the aforementioned female actors.

I turn my back for five minutes and you kids are fighting.

"Can't we all just get along??"

Off-Topic...
Dry Manhattan!...Whereya been?
Go take a peek at "Don Mailed the Book to Peggy" and "Who is Bert Peterson?" and post your responses.

user-pic

Cheers, dry manhattan! Maybe we all just need a cigarette break and few more drinks?

user-pic

....heh heh......

Hi greytone,
I'm glad things are all toned down. I was off doing another show today and have been very busy so didn't see your answer til now. Let's forget it. Others agree it's a man's show. We haven't gotten into any deep background history of any of the girls. They are still a mystery. I think once we know more there could be a deeper understanding and empathy and stronger acting to warrant awards.
I hate to say it since there has been so much controversy over the Barretts but I think both have done some great acting jobs and should be nominated as guest stars. I like what they are doing do you or anyone agree?

user-pic

I like what you said Mary Jane...
I agree that perfect casting has been the key to the success of the series. Casting definitely should be recognized for their contribution to the show's success. I can't visualize anyone else playing any of these characters except those currently performing the roles! Can you?

user-pic

I agree that the women on Mad Men should have been nominated for Emmys. I posted about this very thing right after the Emmy noms were announced. Unfair! I think any or all of the women on Mad Men deserved to be nominated just as much as the men who actually received noms. Maybe next time. Here's to only two more days til MM!!

user-pic

scfan...
Missed your post about the awards. Just asking...which ladie(s) performance(s)?

I think Joan did a great job last season. She stole absolutely every scene she was in.
(Still does.)

user-pic

I didn't mean "Unfair!" about my "post Emmy noms announcement" post not being known about (ha) just meant "Unfair!" that none of the ladies of Mad Men were nominated for Emmys...just to clarify that in my post above! I agree with you, greytone, that Christina Hendricks did a great job last season and stole her scenes. When she's in a scene you can't take your eyes off her (and NOT because of her "huge ass" which I think is proportionate to her bust---she'd look pretty wierd with that ample bosom and a tiny ass, don't all you "Joan bashers" think???) I actually think all the MM women did good enough acting jobs to merit nominations...esp. January Jones.

user-pic

I'll drink to that!

user-pic

......greytone,

"Missin' you, baby!"

Hey! I just now channeled Phil Hartman, channelling Frank Sinatra! Sounded great in my head!

I've been caught up, but will definitely get to the posts you mentioned....I wish the threads would hang around a little longer in our profiles....

As Stevie Winwood said, "Can't Find My Way Home...."

user-pic

Hey Dry Manhattan,
How do you do the bold and fancy writing on the blog?

user-pic

Well, that's encouraging, dama_luna....It lets me know their talent was recognized even if the numbers didn't work out. Thanx for sharing...

Before I go, just wanted to say how deserved a win for Outstanding Main Title Design would be for Mad Men. The show's opening sequence remains a real visual treat week after week! I hope they win!

I just read somewhere that the Democratic presidential candidate is a fan and currently has a Season 1 DVD with him on the plane!

default userpic

Well they did come close to being nominated. I read on a list that Elisabeth Moss was top 10 for lead actress, and Christina Hendricks was top 10 for supporting. I think they really did deserve it, but there's always next year!

user-pic

....Hi Nora Paradiso,

I'm sorry, I tried to just type it, but the bracket kept signalling it to be a tag.

These are just basic HTML tags, creating a break, bolding and italics.

You have to have a tag at the beginning and end of your selection (except for breaks, just the beginning).

Check out some of the online tutorials, it's very easy.

Did anyone notice that replies are being queued in front of the comment? Is that the West coast catching up with the East coast?

I saw this on another thread also.

user-pic

.....also, I did not post the above at 10:28 am. It's 5:30 am here....

Odd....not quite sure what's going on there...

user-pic

Thanks Dry Manhattan,
I'll look it up. I've never blogged before and just want to add some pizzaz!

user-pic

Dry Manhattan,
I think timing is straight now. I posted west coast time 9:55 am and show exactly 3 hours later!
