Don = father figure to Pete?
I'm really curious to see what people think of my thoughts on the show last night - until3am.wordpress.com
Not for any shameless promotion, I don't care how many people come to my site, just that I wrote this thing out over there.
Basically, I'm thinking that the Pete-Don and Betty-Don dynamics are easily the most interesting parts right now...

I love the Betty-Don dynams - will she become so bitter that she becomes addicted to the 'dolls' of the 60s? I hope not - I hope she finds her own way without pills...Pete is most likeable because he is just like us - jealous, envious and insecure. And what is happening to Joan? I hope she continues to be a thorn in Peggy's side!
looks to me like Pete is going to form an alliance with Duck (ugh)
he wants to be DON
How about that Duck-Pete double play last night with the American account? Pete showed up and played his cards right away! Now they are going to consider giving them the account out of sympathy. I really can't stand Duck, that is not a name any adult should have!
I did think it was interesting that Pete went to Don first when he heard of his father's death. Don gave him some good advice, Pete just took a while to take it. I think anyone would have given him the same advice, but he seemed to value what Don had to say and what he would do in the same situation.
I am anxious to see if they get the American account. Wow, that really crushed Don to have to tell Mohawk they were not working with them any more. Like he really felt bad about betraying their trust, maybe he had a concience after all.
I could see don opening up his own ad agency and having Mohawk as his client
oh I have to stop visiting this site it is all to consuming lol
I think Roger is using his heart history as a way to push unpleasant tasks off on Don even more than he did before his heart problems. He is always saying "Don will take care of it".....and gets away with it because Don (so far) doesn't want to upset him. It will be interesting to see how much of that crap Don will take until he blows. Notice also there in Bert's office how Roger had to warn Don when he was about to get into a real humdinger (of an argument) with Duck? Those two are destined for constant fireworks. It will be fun to watch. I don't like Duck either and hope he gets canned.
Don starting his own ad agency...good one cad men!! Draper Olsen ad agency? DO for short? I did love the way Pete went to Don when he got the news about his father. It made me really like Pete on a deeper level. I also loved the way Pete shot down Duck when Duck wanted to get American Airlines. What kind of a monster is Duck? He would go to Pete after losing his father on American Airlines and tell him he wanted that account? Pete hasn't even buried his father yet. Not to mention asking Pete to embrace the airlines that killed his father!! Wow, Duck has his seat waiting in hell for that one.
I agree with you, luvmadmen. And I would take it even a little further. When Pete went to Don (2nd time) after Duck's indecent proposal, Don chased Pete out without hearing his reason for being there - as if to say he didn't want this to become a habit. That seems to have been enough to motivate Pete to support the evil Duck after all. That poor Pete... just looking for love in all the wrong places....
Don's meeting with the American Airlines exec. most likely will not move forward. I think as a courtesy, the AA exec will gracefully tapdance around Don's future overtures.
My guess is that the AA exec. wants to distance himself as far as possible from anybody who would be there as a constant reminder of the plane crash: i.e. Pete Campbell.
It will be interesting to see the dynamics between Duck, Don and Pete play out this season. Duck seems to be a loose cannon with a tame exterior.
Will he be going down in flames with his AA pitch?
Bert will quietly watch the fray with a zen attitude and Roger will observe it a little closer -- but still from the sidelines.
My bet is that Pete will eventually side with Don and Duck will _uck himself out of a job.
As a Mad Man who joined the Mad Ave. circus in the late 60's, I've seen this scenario played out numerous times before. It still goes on.
Stay tuned.
I could see Don and Peggy going together in an agency.
Don't count on Mohawk Airlines coming on board as a client. At least, not for a couple of years, until they've "forgiven" Don.
Advertisers aren't that forgiving. They like to punish agencies/papers for a while by taking their revenue to someone else who will kiss their ass devotedly for the revenue.
Yeah, you are right, wyrter1. Don's insensitive brush off to Pete was a big mistake. With all the sensitive changes to Don and then BAM there is the cold hearted Don back again. That's what they call emotional whip lash. Poor Pete! I feel like Duck is using Pete to get AA to hand over the account based on guilt. What Duck fails to realize is that when anyone does something out of guilt, it will only turn out bad. WLW has it right. Pete will think AA is coming on board with SC, but right before signing the contract, another plane from another airline will fall out of the sky and everyone forgets the AA crash. People start running back on AA planes. AA doesn't need SC anymore and pulls the rug out from under them. Duck will be there without ANY million dollar airline account! Pete will slide his chair over to Don's corner at the last minute to avoid being fired...again! Bert and Don will be smiling while they watch Duck filling his cardboard box, right?
Sounds right to me! (I hope - Duck still has some bombs to drop on SC before he's booted out the door, I think).
