Don Draper's New Locking Office Door

Remember how that anonymous maintenance man installed a lock Episode 1 on Don's door? He no doubt ordered that when that US Mail package (from his suicidal half-brother) was stolen/borrowed by Pete. Its contents revealed Don's former identity which Pete then attempted to use against him for his own career advancement. A lock on the door was the very least Don could have done to preserve his privacy. That lock now comes in handy for "sexy time" !

I agree Don had the lock installed to protect his privacy, having learned that lesson last season.

Was that the same anonymous maintenance man that witnessed the sexy shadow show of Pete and Peggy in season 1?

Also, Don walked in to Peggy crying in his office (right before her "It's not fair..." speech) when he needed to be alone. That may have been a factor in the lock being installed as well.

I noticed this too ... i think it's yet to be revealed (or perhaps never to be revealed). The replies posted here & on another earlier thread (right after the 1st episode aired) all deal with things that happened in Season One, meaning 12-14+ months BEFORE the lock was changed (assuming the lock-change scene took place on Valentine's Day 1962).

It might've had something to do with Don changing offices? After Roger's second heart thing, remember, Don was sizing up Roger's office .... but I believe he said he was going to keep his original office "so Roger always knew he could come back" (or something like that).

Then *poof*, it's 14 mos later, and both Roger & Don seem to have their original jobs, and (so far) no mention of Roger's health.

So I really think it's one of those things we'll either find out later .... or not at all !

At the office, we see that Don is having a lock (or perhaps a new lock) installed on his door.

After the doctor’s appointment, we see Don eat lunch (steak and eggs, and a drink) in a bar. He sees a young academic type (curly hair, glasses) reading Meditations in an Emergency. Don strikes up a conversation about the book, the guy puts him off, treating him as if he’s too stodgy to appreciate poetry.

Don arrives and Lois tells him about his noon meeting. He has that ‘Oh, no, I can’t believe I forgot’ look. Don is so late that his Ginault watch stopped and ice has all melted and Dale has fallen asleep.
