Costume socks

I've noticed that the male characters seem to wearing some type of striped, see-through socks. They look pretty cool. Any idea about how the actors feel about wearing them?

The socks were probably fine gauge ribbed wool or fine cotton lisle which explains their seeming transparency. Socks have completely gone to the dogs nowadays.. Even white sweat socks were made of wool in the early 60s.. You can buy very beautiful finely ribbed lisle socks today in two toned combinations like black and dark red or navy and brown.. They are at a store in Milan. No one else has them anywhere. .

The socks several of the men are wearing are nylon thick 'n thins which are sheer and were very popular in the 50's and 60's. I've worn them for years and still do even though they aren't as popular as they once were. Sock garters were also frequently worn in those days as well to keep the socks up all day. I wish those who determine costuming for the show would show more of the silky sheer socks with sock garters on the male characters as well as in those days most of the men wore the classic sleeveless athletic undershirts under their dress shirts instead of the t-shirts most of the men seem to be wearing in this show. These would definitely be in keeping with the actual styles of the day for accuracy sake.

I wear real sheer socks like Don every day - and dress with slim suits and great shoes - Those are called nylon Thick-N-Thin socks - I get my from sheersox.com and other places on the internet - just do a google search of sheer socks or men's sheer socks. They're great. Also wear the skinny ties, and links, too. So many people dress too casually today, I always wear the retro look - every day. Boston here.

The sheer TNT socks on the men of Mad Men are great! I too wear them and find them to be cool in the summer months and feel great with dress shoes...almost like wearing next to nothing on your feet. I think they look sexy and they should show more of them. Gone are the good old days of everyday dressing to impress in the workplace.

I love sheers socks and wear them everyday. You can get them in the USA right on line. I love Mad Men, but I really love them in Sheer Socks.

I agree! It's so nice to see sheer thick-n-thins worn by many of the characters on the show. They have been part of my daily professional and casual wardrobe ever since I finished college 15 years ago. Even though they've become increasingly difficult to find in recent years, I would not dream of wearing any other kind of sock.
It's funny because I never paid attention to the fact that the characters wear them until recently. There was an ad for the show in a magazine and my 10 year old son pointed out that Jon Hamm was wearing thick-n-thins in the photo.
Besides the fact that I wear sheer thick-n-thins, both he and his brother, age 12, also wear them for dress and dress casual occasions. A few years back, I found them in boys sizes on a business trip in the midwest and bought each of them a pair in black, navy and gray. I was pleasantly surprised how they both took to wearing them and have had to do several orders by mail with this store to keep my Young Mad Men stocked up over the years!
Like father, like son(s) I guess.
Dan.

A further comment on yesterday's comment:
If there are any others out there searching for sheer thick-n-thins in boys sizes to dress their own Young Mad Men, feel free to drop me a line.
I'd be very happy to hear from you and pass along all the necessary info.
All the best,
Dan.

Saw a review they did on blackbookmag : Sure, you know the cats on Mad Men dress way better than you. Maybe your dad rocked those smooth suits (while your mom layered in shapely foundation garments), but is that style strictly period? Doesn't matter -- fashion is meaningless out of context, and it doesn't hurt that the habitués of Sterling Cooper and environs have their wardrobe overseen by the killer eye of costume designer Janie Bryant. Check out our gallery of sartorial stardomGinault watches,(Ginault watch company (www.ginault.com), based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, keeps a comprehensive collections of vintage and new Rolex timepieces to preserve the legacy of Swiss haute horlogerie.
