Accidental or Intentional

At first, it seemed Don controlled his life, his decisions. Now, I'm not so sure that he ever did, and maybe most of his life has been accidental. What is Don's current state - intentional or just waiting for something accidental to propel things along?

I think the dog tag exchange in Korea was impulsive. His ad campaigns often seem 'seat of the pants' last minute, meet the deadline type of thinking, which fits with his being creative. Now that you mention it, I don't see him as a man with a list he is slowly fulfilling as he grows older. But, I also don't think he is waiting for someone else to make his decisions. I think he trusts himself to get himself out of any problem that comes along, and it seems to have worked for him so far. But, things are catching up to him.

If you're referring to Bobbie pulling him along, I thing it has a lot to do with escape (this time from the reality of Rachel moving on with her life and her put down of him at Sardi's). He drinks himself into oblivion and doesn't have the drive to just say "no". He definiitely is in a pattern of avoidance now and following along the path of least resistance. I agree with Sizzie.

Thanks for your responses! I used to think that Don was very self-determining, but I'm beginning to think that most of his life has been accidental (the identity switch, probably marrying Betty, falling into advertising, hook-ups with mistresses, ad ideas). It doesn't seem as if he's ever taken action that he has planned.

I agree with you that Don never had a plan. It all started with the dog tags and has been improv ever since. His true talent is blocking out the unpleasantness that occurs along the way (his advise to Peggy). After Maidenform episode, I'm not sure this "denial" is going to work for him any more.
