Love the show, the style, and the fashions - great sense of detail

My fiance and I love the show. I particularly love the detail that show gives to style and fashion. Mr. Draper is so handsome! I've talked my fiance into a film noir themed wedding where the wedding party will be dressed to the 9s in retro outfits - fedoras, suits, gowns, gloves, hats all from the 40s/50s/60s. I am curious though - one thing we notice is how perfect Don Draper's hair is. I want my fiance to have the same slick look. What does he use to get that oh so sleak sexy look? I have to have my guy adopt that style! It is soooo sexy.

Love the show - I am watching the first season this week on AMC on demand so I can catch up before season 2. The only problem I have with the show is the smoking - way too excessive - was it really like that back then? Loved seeing the kids playing with plastic bags on their heads and jumping all around the car without seatbelts - and the horrendous way women are treated - hard to believe it was really like that back then. I want to like Don Draper but sometimes I can't. Peggy is quite a character - with that hairdo, ears and large backside - how funny.

marge,

ya gotta go for the classic pomade. That's what gives his hair the slick look.

You can have your fiance use NuNile Pomade (they made it back then, and they still make it now -- Last time I looked, it was about $1.00 for a can that will last forever, as you only use a tiny bit of it). Back in those days though, my father used Brylcreem (their motto was, "A little dab'll do ya" and it was true. I think they still sell it (it comes in a tube). If he uses NuNile, tell him to heat the top of it in the can with a blow dryer, or just scoop it out and rub it in his hands to warm it before he applies it. It is VERY GREASY, so tell him not to rest his head on the couch, and use pillow cases you don't care about. And use it SPARINGLY. If you want that kind of look without the grease, then use a good hair GEL. It will dry, and hold the hair in place, and it will feel stiff, but will look wet.

Vivien, yes the smoking, we all love or hate the smoking. My Dad sat and watched all the episodes and all he could say was, "is that all they do on this show is smoke and drink?". I would tell him, "what else was there to do in 1960, but smoke and drink?". We would get a laugh out of that. I also loved how the freezer in a refrigerator was only used for ice cubes. Now we have freezers half the size of the refrigerator and the frozen food section takes up at least half the store.

There is a really great piece on Valet detailing the fashions of Mad Men. They spoke with the Janie Bryant, the show's costume designer. She deconstructs each character's style.
