Well, in the 1960's, the response to "Hey, Dad" would probably have been "straw's cheaper, grass is free," which was meant as a put-down of the hey-sayer. But "hey" had been around for years, as a cry for a friend.

In the early 1970's, my friend Steve and I would play a game called "Hey, Rudy!" which involved driving down the street looking for pedestrians, winding down the window and shouting "Hey, Rudy" (or some other name, depending upon gender).

The results were like "Candid Camera"; people responded to the greeting in a variety of ways.

My former wife found this game so funny that once she actually wet her pants (and the car).

Now, the thing that I find interesting is that the producers don't get the dial tone or the sirens right. The former was a single frequency in the 1960's, not a complex chord. The latter was a sound generated by wind blowing through a whirling mill, not an electronically-generated tone.

Well we said "hey" (and got "hay is for horses" in response. And as I recall in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) Walter Cunningham tells Scout he'll tell young Walt she says "hey" when the men confront Atticus at the jail. So it was around.

The red and blue mailboxes are right. We had one on our corner for years. There were far more boxes then than now because most mailmen (and they were almost exclusively men on routes) walked. They only time you saw a US Postal vehicle was for large package delivery.

I also noticed the "hey Dad" comment and thought it didn't sound right. I was raised in New York during that era. We never used "hey" as a greeting, however, it was often a prelude to an informal question, as in "Hey Jack, what did you get for Christmas?"

Two authenticity comments for an excellent show:

The typeface used for STERLING COOPER signage inside and outside the office is set in Frutiger Light. Frutiger was not available until 1975.

Also, the black Western Electric Model 500 desk phones on every desk have a clear plastic dialing ring in the show. Clear plastic dialing rings for the black Model 500 was not phased in until 1965. They were black metal in 1960. The color models, however, featured the had clear plastic from the very beginning.

Another typeface error for you, in "For Those Who Think Young," when Peggy and Sal are presenting the airline ad with the headline "Where Are You Going?" the words "where are" are set in Zapfino, not released until 1998. (Sure, theoretically one could say Hermann Zapf provided the calligraphy just for Sterling Cooper, but I highly doubt it.) I was surprised to see it, considering how overused Zapfino is already in the design world.

Is that where Yogi Bear's "hey, hey, hey" to the park ranger came from? I thought that was Yogi's signature greeting (the cartoon).
