A Call Girl for Don?

Betty's old friend that they ran into at the restaurant was a call girl. Betty wrote her home phone number on Don's business card. Anyone else out there think the call girl will call Don instead?

Too easy - mBetty will call her friend and her friend will "enlighten" her. She lied to her one friend about her night of passion with Don and the fact that she had no clue she was a call girl until Don mentioned it.

I'm thinking the "Big Guy from Detroit; in the car business" is going to call Don. Don is going to land a big GMC account.

I also think he will land the account and the older Detroit Executive will bring Don out for a night on the town-- he'll get an extra call girl for Don and it will be BETTY, who we know is intrigued by her former roommate's night- and we know Don is having problems in the bedroom, Betty will moonlight as a lady of the night.

This could go in several directions. I was glad to see Betty "assert" herself with the tow truck man. It seems it was the first time she flirted even a little.
I think Don is going to have some health problems....I mean two packs a day and the drinking. They are ALL in for some health issues!
Also, this generation is being slowly over run with educated boomers and egos will get bruised.
In Feb of 64 the Beatles hit the USA and all hell broke loose....
Let the games begin!

Betty lied about breaking down on the road, but Sally was with Betty. Did Sally get threatened and told not to tell her Dad? Did Sally hear Betty when she was flirting with the tow truck man? Was Betty getting all hot and bothered by the tow truck man when he was holding the flashlight in his mouth? Would she have taken a roll in the back seat with the tow truck man if Sally had not been there? Oh, the questions are endless with this one. BTW Sally is looking a little pudgy for a girl her age. In the 60's children were really skinny - no McDonald's french fries off the value menu on a daily basis. Maybe Betty is paying her off with some goodies on the side to keep her mouth shut about Betty's other visitors to the house? Okay...I will stop.

Maybe it was just me, but I got the sense from the awkward exchange between the two couples that perhaps Don already knew the call girl who was Betty's college friend.

luvmadmen, Betty lied to Don, but Sally wasn't with her. I think Sally said to Don (at the same time Don was asking Betty where she was) that "Mommy was late". Sally wasn't in the car with her.

I think you're right, madisonave, that Don "knew" the girl (maybe not for himself, but for out-of-town clients?). It was pretty common to get girls for visiting out of town clients - heck, they even show that in some Rock Hudson/Doris Day comedy from the sixties. Pete did it for the Bethlehem Steel client. But I just can't see Don "lowering" himself to do that for a client, especially because of his mother. I think he just recognized the "type" or "odd age pair up".

If Don can't "perform", I doubt if he's going to "hire" help for the night. Also, Don's mother being a prostitute would probably nix that whole idea. Or maybe not - could be a good Oedipus-themed subtext for his character. For some reason, though, I think Don has too much pride and ego to resort to paying someone to have sex with him. Unless this is going to go the route of Carnal Knowledge/Jack Nicholson.

I got the impression the Asian waitress at the chinese restaurant (?) was a call girl/companion trying to offer her "services" to him by the way she was circling the booth. Did anyone else pick up on that or am I wrong?

Anyway, he sure wasn't interested or played dumb.

I agree with JAMM54, I got a strange vibe from the waitress at the Asian restaurant in the preview. I think Don wasn't interested at all.

I believe something has changed between Don and Betty in the 14 months since we've seen them—Don has taken on the mothering role and Betty is now the "on the town" type. I feel Betty is certainly going to investigate her old friend's lifestyle, especially considering how much Betty enjoyed the possibility of resuming her former modeling career last season. Will this be Betty's way of exacting revenge?

It'll be interesting to find out what transpired in the last year and a half.

The shift of power or change in dynamic of Betty and Don's relationship couldn't all be due to info passed on by the psychiatrist - could it?

Does Don feel that guilty? Did Betty manipulate the guilt to her advantage? What, she has something to hold over him to gain some power in the relationship to get what she wants? Or is this about punishment? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?

Did you notice Betty's voice wasn't so soft or babyish? In fact, her whole demeanor was neither "girlish", subservient to Don or anything from last season. So, what gives? What happened?

Obviously, Betty's still interested enough to want to sleep with Don, but the neediness, adulation, obedience, desire to please is gone. Don isn't her god anymore. Sort of like "take it or leave it, and if you won't do I'll find someone else". BIG personality change in both of them.

I'm just remembering some of those scenes last year where she talked to Don about wanting to be perfect for HIM, cook for HIM, wanting HIM. Well, Don sure isn't "it" for her to that degree anymore.

MadShrubbery, do you think it wasn't accidental that Don was in that Chinese restaurant or whatever it was? Was it a booty call reconnaissance mission, and he lost interest or changed his mind? That was one strange place - couldn't figure out what the heck it was.

You're right jamm54, Betty has lost that babyish voice. I really saw it when she was talking to Racine about her old roommate. Her voice changed and she is going to the dark side, that's for sure. She's not in Kansas anymore, its NYC or bust. The way she was talking to the woman at the stables when the woman said the man was staring at Betty. Betty is playing hard to get. Before she would have blushed and some dumb comment like, "oh, he is just admiring the horse". I think she is dropping the dumb blonde, Marilyn Monroe breathy act. Jackie is in the White House and brunettes rule! Blondes are considered cheap hussies and she is going to get a backbone and jump on the Jackie Kennedy bandwagon. And by the way, what is up with the "Betsy" name her roomate called her? Did she change identies as well? Could she have been a call girl with her buddy?

and has anyone noticed that Betty has been wearing pants an awful lot -- it started toward the end of last season with clam diggers for the beach and she has consistently been "abandoning" the traditional wardrobe for women like her...another sign of her bucking the trend.

@JAMM54

Don's probably waiting for a client there. Could be somebody that thinks the place is good for more than a drink and some foreign cuisine.

default userpic

yeah, that Chinese restaurant scene was strange. The waitress said, "you've been waiting here over an hour" so maybe he had a rendevous with someone (Rachel? another conquest? someone from the past?) who never showed up - the waitress thinks he's lonely and needs company ("ok charley i love you long time").

user-pic

bocaraton, you're a crack-up! A rendevous with Rachael sounds sweet, and maybe why the book was mailed instead, if she was a no show. Don will never get her back (I don't think the series will either). :(

Yeah, luvmadmen, the platinum blonde popularity was going out of style about that time - Marilyn Monroe dies in August 1962. In fact, alot of the platinum blondes were going out of style (Kim Novak, Jayne Mansfield, Bridgette Bardot).

I think Elizabeth Taylor's star and type of dark looks/sexiness was really starting to rise then, too.

user-pic

Does anyone think Betty's feels "empowered" by Don's impotency/humiliation? And though she's not getting the sex she needs - still relishes his "weakness" or "failure"?

I can't imagine Betty being that cold, but I could imagine her being that angry that she'd feel he "got what he deserved for cheating on her" (impotency). Every once in a while, Betty would flash a bit of anger, so is she suffering from repressed rage?

Someone else mentioned that at the Savoy, Betty wasn't exactly mean about it, but she wasn't kind either.

Why is Don taking it? What's the point? That's the part I don't get. Even when they show clips from last season, he was so authoritative, strong, etc. Now he's this withdrawn blob?

user-pic

Yeah, I think Betty is relishing in Don's impotency with a gleem in her eye. Revenge is best served cold and she feels Don is getting his just desserts. I can see the passive aggressive side of Betty coming to the surface. She showed us that when she got angry at her father for having a new girlfriend. I think deep down she feels her father is cheating on her mother as well. Forty years ago a person waited at least a year after the death of a spouse before they started dating someone. I think Don's remarks about her father not being able to fix a sandwich for himself was a very good reason for her father to start wife shopping. I think Betty is still holding angry that Don feels that way. Don's cheating, her father's cheating and Racine's husband is cheating. Betty is getting a good look at society's infidelity and she's angry.

user-pic

Why is Don "taking" it? He is in LOVE with Rachel who is no longer his. He is still grieving for her absence. Don has matured in the past 18 months or so.... He discovered how rich a relationship can be with someone who you feel connected with, who knows you like no other, who you can confide it, cry to, etc. He misses Rachel.
