A Wife for Cooper

As a Robert Morse fan who hopes he is returning, I point out that so far Sterling has a wife but Cooper does not. I propose that it would be both age appropriate and TV history sly to recruit EJ Peeker as a guest as Cooper's wife. Morse and Peeker costarred in a unique suburban light opera on ABC in my sixties childhood. How can the original corporate climber Robert Morse have a Madmen scandal without a spouse?

I absolutely agree that YodaBert needs a wife. He does sport a wedding ring on the show, so who knows, maybe we'll meet her soon. I definitely see somebody old school for his wife--Shirley MacLaine, Faye Dunaway...if Natalie Wood were still alive, then her.

Speaking of wedding rings, all the older men, except for Don and Roger, wear wedding rings on the show--including the "English" researcher, Lee Sr. of Lucky Strikes, and Abe Menken. I don't know if these were instances of actors forgetting to remove the rings for their roles, or if these were character choices/requirements. Mr. Menken wearing a ring is interesting. It means that he was really REALLY devoted to Rachel's mother or that he has remarried. Rachel hasn't mentioned a step-mother, although, it makes an interesting twist to her character if there's another woman competing for her father's affections, and she has some antagonism toward her because of it.

I think the fact that Roger and Don don't wear rings speaks to the fact that they're more old-school than some of the younger generations -- and let's not forget the big point the show makes of Mr. Menken's separate cultural background. As for Lee Sr., maybe a southern thing?

I also think that Don not wearing a ring fits into his multiple personalities, associations, dalliances.

I certainly DO NOT think that some actors forgot to wear their rings, while others fort to take them off. Something tells me that someone with as much attention to detail as Matthew Weiner would never let that fly.

Don and Roger NOT wearing wedding rings makes perfect sense. It fits with both their characters (easier to be a philanderer, LOL). But what I found interesting was that all the OTHER older men on the show do wear wedding rings: Pete's dad, Trudy's dad, the Bethlehem Steel client, the Belle Jolie client, Lee Sr., the English researcher, Freddie Rumsen, Cooper, Mr. Menken--all of them wear wedding rings. The only one who doesn't is Betty's dad. So maybe it's not really a generational thing?

I'm not so sure that double wedding ring ceremonies came into popularity until WWII (seems like I read that somewhere). My dad wore one and so did all the kids' dads that I played with growing up in the '50's to '60's plus all my uncles did. I guess it was just a personal preference. I've also heard that some jobs make it dangerous to wear rings (can get caught in machinery, etc.) but that wouldn't have any bearing on the MM bunch or business execs in general, of course. It's interesting that Pete wears his, of course he's a newlywed and may shed it next season!

I looked up the show that Robert Morse & EJ Peaker were on - it was called That's Life and lasted just one season. Doesn't sound too bad. I wouldn't mind more backstory for Bert.
