Red In The Face: Don's Revenge

I've watched season 1 on my iTunes at least three times already, and only now did I catch Don paying off the elevator operator for... something. Only at the end of the episode with Don's smirk after Roger (his boss) got sick after having to climb 18 flights of stairs (not to mention all that vodka & oysters), did I finally get it. Don was getting back at his boss for hitting on his wife in the previous episode! Did anyone else get that?

I didn't catch that the first time around either -- I just thought it was evidence of karma. But wow, what a great layer to add to that episode! By the way, though -- the scene where Roger hits on Betty is in the same episode. I guess Don didn't waste any time exacting his revenge...or Matthew Weiner didn't want to make us wait for it!

Don Draper can stray as much and with as many side dishes as he pleases...but Mrs. Draper is not to be even so much as flirted with..if anyone dares step over into Don's "territory" that person pays dearly! Also, (this is a spoiler if anyone wants to stop reading) remember after Roger had his heart attack and Don was there at the hospital with him looking so concerned? Part of that might have been due to the fact he was glad the attack didn't happen due to the zillion flights of stairs right before the puke scene!

No, I did not catch that revenge by Don. Don has that subtle gift of taking revenge and you don't even know he has attacked you. Remember the birthday party episode when he was sent to pick up the cake? He was gone for three hours and left the family waiting? Subtle revenge with a smile, that's our Don. I had a ex-sister inlaw like Don. You said anything she didn't like, watch out. It took many family members years (some never did) to figure out their mishap wasn't bad karma, it was her revenge. It all sounds to familiar now. Roger didn't see it coming and probably still doesn't. Thanks for the insight!! I just love these MM writers, they are awesome!

@lipplog Yes! wasn't that a great pay back? I think that was one of the cleverest scenes I've noticed. Roger boasteing to Don in the bar that he was proud of Don for keeping up with him. That smirk on Don's said it all. Wonder how the staff will respond with "Duck" coming on board. Roger likes to keep things stirred up. Hope he's coming back.

(SPOILER)
yeah, revenge is sweet, and it gives us more insight into Don's mysterious life. But it's also about age. At the bar Roger starts to really feel old (when the girls only want to flirt with Don). Don is just giving him a reminder that he's no young buck anymore (kinda fitting that Don gets Roger's job later in the season)
