Peggy's Pregnancy
Did Elizabeth Moss, the actress who plays Peggy, actually have a baby? If not, I think the costume and make up people did a remarkable job -- especially with the fat around the jaw line.

@kurrykat:
No, Elizabeth Moss was not pregnant! Check out this Making Of video explaining the whole thing:

The makeup artists did a wonderful job on Moss. Her "weight gain" was so gradual, I was shocked when I re-watched the first episode and saw how petite she actually is. I wonder what she'll look like in the season 2 premier. I read somewhere that the seasons are supposed to take place a year or two apart from one another. I can't wait!
Considering the excellence of Mad Men, I was disappointed and surprised when the storyline turned to the switching of dog tags during the war. It is fanciable to the point of absurd to imagine he (Dick/Don) could have carried that off. Why wouldn't the real Don Draper's family have made an investigation (as they would have believed him to still be alive). And why wouldn't Pete report his findings to the FBI as 'Don' had committed a serious crime by impersonating an officer, which surely, would have been discovered when he returned to his military base in the USA for discharge?? This was a poor cop-out, which mars an otherwise near-perfect series.
I don't think it was unusual. This was the era that was pre-digital for one thing. No quick access to info. If I remember correctly Don/dick's family didn't care a whole lot about him. That is one of the reasons why he is so haunted as an adult. Why would they bother to investigate? With the body blown up, they wouldn't have much to go on. I think it shows his desperation to be able to have a new life, a real chance in the world. Remember how sad and defeated his brother was? That's also what Dick was running from.
I agree with you sofia. The lack of computers to track people led to many pieces of information never connecting. I think Don Draper's family just thought he was a MIA (missing in action) POW (Prisoner of War). There are hundreds of POW and MIA's still not accounted for from the war. Many families just gave up on trying to find them. I thought MM's twist to change identities for Dick Whitman was pretty insightful and by no means a cop out. As for Pete turning Don into the military authority, that does raise some questions that could have been addressed. If Pete had turned Don into the authorities, it would get Don Draper court martialed and possibly he would be asked to resign at SC to save face for the company, but would it get Pete promoted? Probably not, and Pete and Don both knew that. SC has built loyalty to Don Draper for the money he has made while he has been employed. It has always been about the money. Stealing an identy has no effect on the money he has brought to SC. Now, if Don had been stealing money from SC, then that would give SC a reason to side with Pete. Stolen identity today is a much greater crime than it was years ago. Don could have just changed his name legally in the court system and gone on as Don Draperson. No one would would have thought twice about it back then. I still have questions about Adam's suicide? If Adam really cared about his brother, why wouldn't he be okay with leaving Don and his new identity alone? Or maybe he felt committing suicide was a way to keep helping his brother Don/Dick maintain his new identity without any strings attached? I hope the new season goes into the Adam and Don/Dick relationship they had as kids.
Adam was so excited about finding Dick/Don, but Dick/Don wasn't sure how to handle it. To Adam having Dick/Don as his older& only brother until he went into the service (only to escape the horrible family life they had) meant everything to him. I think Don felt really guilty about the fact that he didn't want anything to do with his former life. Even through Adam seemed to have turn out to be a nice guy. Don created this pristine life for himself and was shocked that he may have to come with some sort of story to explain away the fact that Adam even existed. I believe Adam hung himself because he felt that his only brother was ashamed of him. Don did not explain himself to Adam very well and could have worked something out so that they could still have each other in their lives. That is something Don will have to deal with.
On another note. Who thinks that Rachel, off on her trip over seas is pregnant? I just had that feeling when she took off so fast.
On Peggy being pregnant. I noticed the chage within the first 4 epsoides. Great makeup job. Along with the clothing. Now what is going to happen to the baby? Season 2 coming up!!
Oh, I think all of us MM fans are pretty convinced that Rachel is pregnant. It's just a matter of which espisode they decide to reveal it. I'll have to admit that I am always the last one to guess anyone is pregnant on any TV show. I thought Peggy was just spending too much time and money on the food cart. You know that "Freshman 15" - the 15 pounds that every new freshman in college gains when they start eating cafeteria food on a daily basis. As far as what happens to the baby, I still feel she will give it up for adoption. I will be disappointed if it turns out any other way. Young, unmarried women did not keep their babies in the 60's. I have an adopted sister and brother born in the 60's. My parents didn't have to wait years for the babies like they do today. Abortion wasn't legal and the women followed through on her unexpected pregnancy. The end result was usually giving the baby up for adoption. I get along with my adopted sister better than I do with my real brothers!!
Rachael pregnant? Naaw, that would be a tough one to work in, I think. Rachael runs off to Israel and gives birth to an Israeli? Well, more likely it would be Japan (at least that's where wealthy Seattleites went for an abortion). I thought Rachael was a little too savvy for that, and she kind of had a man's demeanor in business. She really was the "prodigal son" for her father, and didn't have the luxury of jeapordizing that, unlike her married sister in the 'burbs. Remember her sister was pretty cynical about marriage, romance, and men, and I didn't think Rachael was too far behind her in that regard. More important, could Pete handle this situation in the blackmail department!? No!
I agree, LUVMADMEN, unwed mothers of any age, rarely kept their babies. I can't see Peggy doing that at all or her family, whoever they are.
I'd sure like to see more backstories on some of the rest of the characters, though. Especially Joan, who I don't really understand. Joan's got to be about 22-25 at the start of Season 1, and dangerously close to "old maid" status for the era. I'd like to see Pete tackle that secret affair!

Superb show. I can't wait until the 27th.
As someone mentioned prior, I was curious about the real Don Draper's family. If he had any family they certainly would have been informed that he had been discharged and returned to the States. I guess back then it would be too difficult to find someone who doesn't want to be found. Still, that would make for a great story if one of the real Don's family members showed up!
Hey, that would be a good story - Don Draper's family connecting with Dick Whitman aka Don Draper!! What if the real Don Draper had a girlfriend back home and never shared that with Dick Whitman? Maybe a love child between the real Don Draper and his girlfriend? The child hires a detective to find her real father and they show up at the Draper's house. Betty answers the door and there she stands with her famous "deer in the headlights look"! HA! Don comes home to a drunk Betty and a house full of angry people. Pete happens to stop by the Draper's to go over the Clearisil account and steps into a gold mine of blackmail information. Ok, I know...I really need season 2 to start soon!!
Something is not adding up with the chronology of Korea, the "real" Don Draper, Dick/Don's age, etc. Pete said the "real" Don would have been 43 in 1960. That would make him 33 in 1950 when Korea began. When "real" DD met Dick Whitman, he said he'd served more than 3 years in the service. Korea only lasted 3 years. Something is wrong here.
Ok MM writers, if you are looking at this blog...you might want to address this age gap of Don, his army career and his work career. It is bothering so many of your viewers. You can't have age gaps and (or replace characters) and hope your viewers are not catching it....it's not good for business.
Ok, I JUST finished with S02E05. Now I'm at a loss. Did Peggy have an abortion or did she keep the kid? Is he the blond we see the previous episode or is the kid her sister's? In episode five, you see her sister pregnant! Oh, the actor playing Donald Draper is HOT!
I still have not seen all of season one. I have a question.
I saw a clip on the net where Peggy got her OBGYN exam and some birth control pills. While on the table, Peggy looked at the calander, it was March. If she was already pregnant, the baby may have been a Christmas baby...am I on the right track here? Since she is Catholic maybe part of the baby not being her's is because it is G-d's baby or some screwy religious thing. Peggy seems like the good girl that gets caught up in things occassionally. We all know women like Peggy. Really quiet and demure, yet really bright and intelligent except when it comes to common sense.
The doctor told her not to be a strumpet..LOL! Love that word.
