Fabulous Show -- Can't Wait for Season 2
There are not enough superlatives to describe my delight with this intelligent and most entertaining series. Having been a very young teenager in 1960, I can attest to the dead-on accuracy in all aspects of its presentation. From the obvious -- fashions, hairstyles, and settings right down to minute details such as a bottle opener on the garage door frame to the uncannily perceptive portrayal of the attitudes, mores and psychology of this more innocent, yet evolutionary period in our society's past, it never ceases to enthrall. I cannot get enough.
I came upon this show in its first run quite by accident. Who would guess that AMC would feature a weekly serial? Once discovered, I was intrigued and then hooked. I taped and watched all of the reruns, including the episodes I had already seen. I cannot recall the last time I found such high quality programming on what is correctly, now more than ever, known as the "boob tube". It is a testament to the idiocy of the major networks to pass on something like this in favor of the new 'reality' t.v, or worse, air weekly series which require the viewer to suspend reality entirely to believe the fictional, often fantastic, stories they choose to tell.
Kudos to AMC for enhancing the 'vast wasteland'. Kudos to the creative genius of Matthew Weiner who brings us the readily recognizable personalities who populate the world of Mad Men and kudos to the cast of fine actors who bring them to life. There is nothing not to like about this series. It is a joy to savor its many nuances, both transparent and subtle. I have spread the word among my peers to give this show a chance. I am positive that they will not be disappointed. All I want to know is the date and time for the Season Two debut!

Couldn't have said it better myself. Being born in 1951, I was "only" 9 in 1960, but EVERYTHING is exactly the way it was. " Roll down your windows, kids, I'm lighting up!"
Bring on Season 2 ASAP!
Thanks for the comment scfan. Maybe in Season 2, the Drapers will go to the "drive-in" to catch a movie - speaker secured to the window and the kids in the back seat in their p.j.'s of course. Nostalgia rules!

So Funny! I recall swinging on the swing sets at the drive-in with all the other kids--all in our p.j.'s! I think they furnished the swing sets to get the kids tired out so they'd fall asleep faster and the parents could then enjoy the show without interrruptions! MEMORIES...this show sure brings them rushing back!
I wasn't around in the 60's, but grew up in a family populated by guys like Roger Sterling. My grandfather, president of a mid-sized company, used to screen management candidates by how they held their liquor during board meetings! Man was I disappointed when I got to corporate America.
I fully agree with you MMfan! Finally a reason to turn on the idiot box!
How things have changed! If the old boys clubs still existed (and maybe in the minds of some of my generation, they still do), what would they think of our first female candidate for president? Some of them are probably turning over in their graves at the prospect. And what about the racial prejudices? See any 'people of color' in executive positions at Sterling Cooper? Think about the two Democrat potential nominees and realize the amazing distance we have come in less than 50 years (for good or for ill, depending on your political perspective).
As for liquor, I raise my glass in a a toast to the genius of the show in all its glory.
All I can say is "DITTO !!!" They have done an absolutely super job with this show. Damn shame it is not on primetime and getting the recognition from the masses that it really deserves!
This show makes 95% of the crap that ABC, CBS , NBC and Fox televise look like the half baked "hooey" that it really is. Who wants to see another reality show? They only do them because they are cheap to produce, they don't need to pay high salaries to actors and to writers ... and the top executives pocket all of the $$$$$.
I am very impressed with all of the detail presented with MAD MEN right down to the bottle openers and even the underwear that people wore back in those days. I was only 5 years old back in 1960. But each time I watch this show, it seems to allow me to see what my Parents and Grandparents must have lived through.
I have nothing but praise for the Writers and the Director of this show!
