Episode 5 - Some Questions
I'm watching episode 5 and Don won a special award. A horseshoe-topped trophy - exactly what is that?
What kind of award did Don win? And what is the meaning of Newkie? I think some parts of this drama could be not true. I know that. But at the same time I anxious to know actor's words is true or not. A horseshoe-topped trophy is really existing award?

An interesting question. I thought Don won some sort of advertising award. Later, I was watching the episode "The Hobo Code" in which Don's step-mother states "My mom always said that life is like a horseshoe. It’s fat in the middle, open on both ends and hard all the way through."
When I watched all the episodes through again, I thought it could be some kind of symbolism--I never noticed the horseshoe the first time around. Of course, I could just be way off.
Any thoughts?
Well, I think the horseshoe references refer to Don's luck starting to run out. Remember Adam found the issue of Advertising Age in the trash can in an office he was cleaning in the Empire State Building (where he worked as a janitor) and it had a pic of Don and Roger holding their awards and he knew it was his brother in the pic? I think the shot of the horseshoe on the award coming loose and turning downward was an omen of Don's life starting to come apart at the seams.
I usually don't like series, but I loved, loved, loved this one. I'm 55 and it's like watching your parents. The booze, pills, cheating, sex abuse in the work place. It's so authentic. I can't wait for the next season.
Also, one of the cast member was killed this winter, I believe, skiing -- which one was it? Anyone know.
Good insite scfan, Don had a brief moment there that he didn't realize he had it all going for him, unitl the other shoe dropped.egk719 I think your talking about when Don was rubbing Betty's head hard in one spot. That was called a Newkie(sp) It was meant as kidding around type of fun. As far as the skiing accident is it one of the cast members or a person mentioned in an episode? Can't wait unitl I get the DVD and then I can realy check it all out again and come with new theories.
