DGA and SAG Awards Aftermath

A big congratulations goes out to Alan Taylor, who won the Directors Guild award for the premiere episode "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." In the pilot, he created a look that carried all the way through the first season. That's no small feat.

The Screen Actors Guild awards didn't go as well for the boys on Madison Avenue, though. Jon Hamm, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama, lost out this time to James Gandolfini for The Sopranos, a show which also won the ensemble cast award. Was it nostalgia? Did Mad Men get robbed? Will the AMC series end up on top again at the Writers Guild awards on February 9? Let us know what you think.

I know for a fact that Madmen will always stay on top for as long as the show stays on air. Madmen will get honored through whether it is the on television or through us the fans. We keep the air time running at a substantial pace so the more we watch awards will come now or later. I love everyone in this show so rock on with those awesome acting skills!! Love

I agree--The Sopranos wasn't really in contention during the Golden Globes, so it's easy to realize that there was some pressure to give them awards seeing as it would be their last time up at bat. Mad Men, on the other hand, will continue moving forwards, and as you said, it has the support of us fans to make sure it continues to be recognized. Bring on the Emmys!

I know it's goofy, but I'd love to see what the Mad Men cast wore to the SAG awards. I saw them briefly when the camera panned over them, but would love to see in more detail. This show is amazing and can't wait until season 2.

@jennatto: IMy first exposure to the show was when a friend of mine wore velvet gloves to a wedding, claiming she was going through her own Mad Men phase. So when I watched the show, I was careful to pay attention to the way all the actors were dressed and notice how proper it always was.

As much as I'd like to see the cast in 00s garb, I almost would hate to spoil the illusion I've created about them. Thoughts?

Does anyone know how the writers' strike is affecting the show? Will there be a season 2 of this show that I love?? I'm not up on the latest news about the strike and this is one of the only tv shows that I watch. Thanks in advance...

Not to worry--there will definitely be a second season, though I'm not sure when exactly. Hang in there!

I sent an e-mail to AMC, asking when Season 1 would be out on DVD. I just got a response, indicating there is no release date and nothing to confirm that it will in fact be released on DVD. I was given an e-mail address to write to, to suggest that it be released on DVD. info@amc.com.

PLEASE, everyone, please write them and request Season 1 on DVD.

Thanks!!

The season 1 DVDs are not a question of if, but when. Don't worry, they're coming! We're just not sure when exactly yet. As soon as I get word on even an estimate, rest assured I'll come back here and report it to you all!

I began working in NYC in 1963. The look is spot on not to mention the morals. I caught an error last night though! When pitching the Liberty Executive Account For Men they showed a picture of the "Liberty Torch" for the proposed Ad. Gotcha!
In the 1960's the torch on the Statue of Liberty was still made out of glass (like leaded glass) sections. The one piece molded flame was not introduced until sometime in the 70's. Love this show...hope it runs for years!

@geckogal: Interesting observation--good eye! The visuals really make this show for me. I love the subtleties in set design and wardrobe. So I guess I can forgive one TINY goof in an entire series that's perfected the era.

As a child born in the mid 60's, I noticed many things in our house from this show. How could this be, when my earliest memories didn't take place until last 60's, early 70's? I caught the making of Mad Men and realized why. Fashions hit the east coast and upper class society ten years earlier than the west coast and middle class societies. So what my parents thought were fashionable items in the early 70's (and were in my middle class, west coast home) were really the early 60's fashions. Kind of like the knock offs being done today. By the time we all wanted fake Rolex's, those that had real Rolex's dumped theirs and were on to another expensive, fashionable watch. So the show can span two decades of nostalgia for many. It just depends on where you lived (east coast vs. west coast) or by your social class (middle class vs. upper class). It is what makes this show AWESOME!!
