Season 4 Ratings Off to Strong Start; John Slattery Profiled in New York Magazine
This week, Season 4 debuts with strong ratings, John Slattery opens up to New York magazine, and Jon Hamm answers fan questions for Time magazine.
- Sunday's Season 4 premiere registered 2.9 million viewers, up 5% from last season's premiere, as Entertainment Weekly and Deadline Hollywood pointed out. Meanwhile, The New York Times and Time magazine recap Sunday's premiere episode.
- John Slattery landed a juicy feature in New York magazine. "I realized, you can't really ride the girl in your underwear, singing cowboy songs, then refuse to do the blackface," he admits, discussing his initial hesitations.
- Jon Hamm answered ten fan questions in Time magazine. The secret to keeping Don Draper's hair perfectly coiffed, he says, is loading it up with "three pounds of hair spray and gel."
- The New York Observer issues a full report on the New York City Times Square Mad Men Season 4 premiere event on Sunday.
- Matthew Weiner spoke with the New York Times Magazine about anachronisms in the show, specifically ones pertaining to language. "When in doubt, I don't use it," Weiner says of questionable expressions.
- The New York Review of Books offers a thoughtful, lengthy analysis of what makes Mad Men such a successful historical drama, calling Weiner "an auteur with few peers in the history of his medium."
- The New York Times assembles a slide show of reader-submitted photos of real-life ad men (and women) from the '60s.
- Vintage stores are having trouble keeping up with requests for Mad Men-inspired clothing, according to the Baltimore Sun.
- Valet rounds up ten of its favorite casual fashion ensembles from Mad Men.
- Kiernan Shipka snagged a Los Angeles Times profile in which she reveals that she's only allowed to watch mom-approved sections of the show.
- Elisabeth Moss talks to USA Weekend about married life.
- A Chicago Tribune writer reminisces about the real Mad Men of Chicago.
- The New York Post spotlights the Mad Men Barbie collection and speaks to the designer behind them, Richard Best.
- The Washington Post profiles the winners of its Mad Men contest, which invited readers to submit photos of their '50s and '60s-inspired home decor.
- According to Variety (no link), AMC and Lionsgate are entering talks to extend Mad Men's contract through at least a sixth season.
