Bryan Batt's Got a Memoir - She Ain't Heavy, She's My Mother
Sal Romano fans will gain new insights into actor Bryan Batt when his memoir -- or "momoir," as he calls it -- hits stands on Tue., May 4. Just in time for Mother's Day, She Ain't Heavy, She's My Mother: A Memoir is Batt's tribute to his mom, a steel magnolia who kept her family together while contending with everything from cancer to an unfaithful, alcoholic husband.
Batt, who conceived of the memoir while shooting Mad Men, paints a vivid portrait of growing up gay in New Orleans in the '70s. Readers are treated to tidbits about his early years, from his stint as page to the Queen of the Spring Fiesta to his theatrical debut as a dancing reindeer. He also describes his career on Broadway and television as well as the launch of his beloved home design boutique, Hazelnut, which he opened in New Orleans with longtime partner Tom Cianfichi.
"The book came to be because of a dinner party with B.D. Wong and Paul Rudnick," Batt explained to AMCtv.com. "After a few glasses of wine, some inexplicably hidden childhood memories came flooding forward, and when I told the stories of my Steel Magnolia/Auntie Mame of a mother and my youth in New Orleans, the entire party was in hysterics." Nurse Jackie producer Richie Jackson threatened to write Batt's stories if he didn't, prompting Batt to put pen to paper out of "'identify theft' fear."
Batt's been promoting the book in interviews with the Windy City Times and Zap2it, and he told AOL Television that his childhood was "Running With Scissors meets David Sedaris meets Tennessee Williams." Interested in hearing Batt talk about his book in person? Check out Bryan Batt's calendar of book signings.
