Jon Hamm Goes Shirtless (a Few Times) on SNL

jon-hamm-snl.jpg

Night owls -- and hard-core Maddicts -- will have witnessed Jon Hamm bringing the funny on SNL this past Saturday night. This is Hamm's second stint as host; he joked that, since his first appearance (in the fall of '08) fulfilled a lifelong dream, this one was just for the paycheck.

There was a nod to Hamm's Don Draper persona in his monologue, but in this go-around Hamm's skits were anchored in contemporary times. He played a shirtless saxophonist named Sergio; newly elected Massachusetts senator Scott Brown; and, with musical guest Michael Bublé, the owner and operator of a restaurant specializing in pork and Champagne -- Hamm and Bublé.

Critics were appreciative -- here's a sample of the early reviews:

• Says the Star-Ledger's Alan Sepinwall: "Here's hoping his stints become an annual event."

• According to TV Squad, "People as handsome as Hamm shouldn't be allowed to be funny as well."

EW also had praise for Saturday's episode, attributing its success to "a willingness on the part of the host to go for broke."

If you missed the episode -- or need to see more of Sergio -- you can watch the whole thing on Hulu.

I kinda agree with the reviewers above....handsome and funny both? Doesn't seem quite fair, does it?

Loved the skit with "Scott Brown" and his constant interruptions and sparkly winks!....esp. old "Robert Byrd" and his black and white "flapper" fantasy! Poor Fred A., stuck with playing Barney Frank! The entire skit was hilarious beyond belief, IMO.

I say Yes to the "annual event"!

user-pic

I found his every appearance to be hilarious. I especially loved him with Michael Buble and the Hamm and Buble restaurant.....just what I love, ham in my champagne. I do have to wonder, though, just why he is always so terrificly funny on SNL, and poor January Jones was given such awful material to work with. Makes me wonder just who is responsible for creating his skits...Jon Hamm or the SNL writers? I still love his James Mason impersonation. I laugh every time.

Hi Z!!!!

Long time no post, glad to hear from you, I was so worried!

I posted on another thread about the sorry material given JJ when she hosted.....and you're so right, it does make one wonder.....

Stick around, kid.....you've been missed very much.

user-pic

I missed it! Whaaa! Our provider (Direct TV) pulled all of our local channels and said we needed to upgrade our equipment. Buttheads. Anyway, I agree with the JJ material, you both are right!
How are you gals handling the "Off Season?" August can't come fast enough! :)
P.S. Don't have high speed either I live in the country so may have to go to the library to see it. IF it ever stops snowing! lol

user-pic

I can honestly see Jon having an SNL legacy similar to Alec Baldwin's and Steve Martin's. His second time out was even more hilarious than his first (and he appeared in practically every skit!) and he just seems so comfortable hosting the show. It comes naturally (like everything, I imagine!) to him.

I could kind of see that January was nervous when she hosted, but I agree; she was given terribly written sketches to begin with.

user-pic

I agree with Pelosi on this one - mama like!

as far as January is concerned, I can only assume that writing for SNL week after week could become difficult without good inspiration. Perhaps jon's complete abandonment of his inhibitions let him be the perfect muse for the SNL cast - anyway, it seems like a collaborative process + jon's seems like a funny guy so maybe the skits may have organically evolved throughout the week.

must be hard to be on SNL when you have a more reserved celeb on.

user-pic

Jon hamm is just a naturally talented person; he's a great dramatic actor yet he is also extremely funny. Now it may be that he did get better skits than January got when she hosted, and she did seem nervous and slightly off kilter, the aura this guys gives off is incredible.

I second SC's comment, Zerelda. You have been missed so please come back often!

Now that we know we are getting a S3 encore, we all need to promise to log on and comment like we are seeing the episodes for the first time.

I am dying here waiting for the August and S4. It holds so much promise, a new start, but I am still a little bit wary. MW plays his cards pretty close to the vest so we really don't know what to expect.
I hope the girls who posted the best scoops for S3 will again log on and help us out.

Hi Pammaddict...you might want to check it out on hulu.com like Lily posted above.

It's sooooo worth watching....and Michael Buble ain't too hard on the eyes (or ears) either!

I laughed until my sides hurt at the Scott Brown sketch! OMG whoever wrote that *maybe Jon himself*, is a genius! Fred A as Barney Frank! Hah!

Monologue was priceless too!

"Hamm and Buble",,,Michael Buble was great in that as well.

Sometimes SNL just isn't funny....but not this time!
Hats off to Jon Hamm....it would be great to see him return to SNL often....so funny!

I laughed out loud at SNL for the first time in a VERY long time thanks to Jon Hamm. He can do comedy, drama all the while looking delicious. Loved the "Sergio" skit and the Scott Brown sketch. I hope SNL invites him back soon! At least we will have that while we WAIT for Season 4!

I think John Hamm's performance on SNL was awesome. He was definitely one of the better hosts of this season. His character Don Draper is the most interesting in Mad Men.
