Mad Men Surfaces on More Year's Best Lists; NY Times Debates Economic Lessons of Series
Talk about holiday cheer! Mad Men has hit the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press and the Star-Ledger's "Best of" lists. Merry Christmas everybody.
• The LA Times' Mary McNamara put together her 2009 top TV list which includes "The seduction of America by Don Draper."
• Fellow critic Robert Lloyd argues that not all series "need 22 episodes a year" and cites Mad Men as an example of how "Shorter seasons can mean better focus and less filler."
• The Chicago Tribune explores the Golden Age of TV and the trends that made it possible. Mad Men is referenced as part of "the rise of cable."
• On a similar note, the Austin American-Statesman runs down the decade, which it also considers to be TV's "golden age." Mad Men makes the list: "Weiner's genius lies in how he melds his characters' internal and interpersonal conflicts with the tumult of an era that's been studied to death..."
• The Detroit Free Press' Year in Review includes the launch of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce under "best TV fresh start."
• TV Squad's Best of 2009 list singles out Mad Men's Season 3 finale: "there aren't many season finales that not only tie up a lot of plot points but also completely shift show's reason for being."
• The Star-Ledger concurs in its own year's best list: "The finale paid homage to '60s heist films and perfectly set up the series and its characters to confront the huge post-JFK changes that we know are coming."
• You'll find other best of the year citations in The Palm Beach Post, San Jose Mercury News, the Tampa Tribune, the Huffington Post and Salon.
• The AP counts down the 50 items that changed our lives this decade and includes retro chic, attributing that to Mad Men.
• The NY Times' Economix blog debates the economic lessons of Mad Men.
