Mad Men Recognized by AFI, WGA, SAG and HFPA; Is Second Most Time-Shifted Show
It was a busy week for Mad Men, which reaped in a number of early awards-season nominations. The American Film Institute, the Writers Guild, the Screen Actors Guild and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were among the voting bodies that recognized the show this year. Read on...
• The AFI included Mad Men on its list of the top ten shows of the year. You can read more in People and the Hollywood Reporter.
• The series also picked up three WGA nominations (more details in the LA Times, the Hollywood Reporter and Variety) ...
• Plus, a pair of SAG nominations, one for Hamm and one for the ensemble.
• Let's not forget the series scored three Golden Globe nominations this week as well.
• Wondering how Jon Hamm reacted? Besides thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and congratulating the team behind the show, said Hamm, "I'd also like to come up with something witty and off-the-cuff to add, but it's so, so early out here, and I'm so, so tired."
• Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle pulls together his list of standout actors from 2009, and it includes Jon Hamm. "He's been superb for three seasons, but it was this last one ... where Hamm separated himself from the pack." Goodman also counts down his favorite programs of the year, and Mad Men's on top.
• The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette put together their list of the year and include Mad Men in second place: "Matthew Weiner found a way to hit the reset button on this fabulous, psychological period drama and ensure there will be plenty of character stories as the show moves forward."
• TV Guide's roundup of this yar's biggest water cooler events, includes the lawn mower incident of Episode 6 "Guy Walks Into an Ad Agency." (No link, Dec. 21 issue). In the same issue, Matt Roush puts together his top ten cheers and jeers for the year, and Mad Men lands in the No. 2 spot (under cheers!).
• EW's Ken Tucker breaks down his favorites for the year, and puts Mad Men on his top ten list. When it comes to the best episodes of 2009, the Season 3 finale, "Shut the Door. Have a Seat" comes in at No. 2: "Part madcap caper, part weighty drama, it was a fitting conclusion to a season built around change." (No link, Jan. 1, 2010 issue)
• Mad Men makes the Best of the Decade rosters put together by the Charlotte Observer and the San Diego Union-Tribune.
• More scientifically, Nielsen revealed its top shows of 2009; Mad Men is the second-most popular time-shifted program, with a 58 percent bump in household ratings once DVR-viewings are added in.
• ABC News talks to set decorators, including Amy Wells, on dressing their shows for Christmas episodes.
• Speaking of the holidays, People magazine attends Christina Hendricks' holiday party and she shares a recipe for a spiced pumpkin cocktail.
• The News-Observer has some ideas for giving your holidays a Mad Men-style vintage vibe.
• Both the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal had fashion stories this week referencing Mad Men. The WSJ rounded up some fashion trends, and included Mad Men with regards to men's suiting. The NY Times points out that that this generation is dressing better than the last, thanks in part to the show.
• Matthew Weiner participated in a Hollywood Reporter event that brought showrunners together to talk about the industry's renaissance.
• E! Online "chased down" Weiner at a recent industry confab and got a quick Q&A about the end of Season 3 and some discussion of Season 4.
• With the release of Selling the Sixties, some sites are revisiting the videos of the real ad legends of the era which you will find in our video player. (Scroll across the the "Ad Legends" tab.)
• Don't forget Did You Hear About the Morgans, with Elisabeth Moss opens today. Here's a related interview in New York magazine.
• New York magazine also includes Moss, along with husband Fred Armisen, in its round up of likable power couples.
• And because there is a list for just about everything, even for autograph collectors, Elisabeth Moss hits No. 2 on a roster of gracious celebrity signers.
• Finally, here are some early photos of Jon Hamm in his new movie, The Town.

Thanks for all the interesting reading, Lily....
I esp. loved the article about Christina Hendricks' party (People link) and her Pumpkin Spice drink recipe. That might be a good one to try!
So many good tidbits, and too many to list, thanks again.
Keep it coming....as you know, we need all the help we can get to pass the loooooong months until S4....and the S1 On Demand(s) are helping somewhat, I must say.
I agree. As always thanks for all the links, Lily. You do all the work, and we enjoy the rewards.
AMC has to be on cloud 9 with all the honors being bestowed on MM and BB. It is the little network that could!

Yes, kathie, we do need all the help we can get in these long months.....glad we have a few behind us already....but, it's those last three (the summer ones) that seem to d--r--a--g beyond belief, God help us.
We'll make it, we always do....besides we have to! lol??
Happy Holidays (Merry Christmas, too....can't help it, I'm old fashioned!) to one and all and may all have a happy and healthy 2010, too!
Thus the phrase "Transformers movie" tells a viewer everything they need to know about what that movie is. It's the non-copyright-violating equivalent of fanfiction. I guess as long as we're fixated on "high concept" story ideas, we'll be stuck with a lot of sequels and remakes, and very little original work. best internet telephone

I am sitting in the bar of the Loews Hotel in New Orleans waiting for January Jones, the actress who plays the immaculate Betty Draper in the hit television series Mad Men, set in the early 1960s. Scanning the room, I look for someone tall and blonde, someone who resembles Grace Kelly.

Mad Men is like an ecstasy. Once you’re starting watching it, you don’t want to miss any episodes. It is indeed, I mean really a great show. I just love it. There was one time that I was watching it on the beach, I brought my portable DVD and just watching under my beach umbrella .
Crazy than I hadn't even heard of it but I guess since I don't live in the US and the world cup is all the buzz in my country at the moment its not surprising. With all that positive press I'll make a point to give the series a go though.

I’ve become a fan of sorts of the A&E program, Intervention. It’s a reality-driven show, but without all the bells and tantalizing whistles. It, however, depicts the life of an addict and attempts to break down the source of addiction to help the individual find the road back to recovery through a surprise intervention by friends and family. This latest one had me and just wouldn’t let go…

Hell, it's good to have Mad Men back, dodgy flashbacks notwithstanding. ipad And there's enough in this series-three opener to get you squirming with excitement. It's not so much about what's going to happen, but who it's going to happen to.
