Hot Topic - What Is Peggy's Relationship With Don All About?
AMCtv.com awards the Talk forum and blog commenters quoted in our weekly "Hot Topics" post with prizes like a Mad Men poster or a Mad Men 2010 calendar (limit one per person).
One idea bandied about on the forum at season's end regarded Peggy's feeling for Don. "Could she be in love with him," some asked. Commenters were divided as to what dynamic the pair share.
• "I can see her having romantic feelings for Don. She never left SC even after Don kicked her around. Even after she had several other offers." -- manhattangirl36
• Don is her mentor and she admires him and appreciates how he does business, but is not in love with him, There are plenty of female/male mentorships that have nothing to do with romantic love. -- 485Madison
• "Hers is the difficult flip side of the coin of feminism. Once she has achieved a certain equality with her male peers, her chances of finding an equal life partner are diminished." -- grumpyoldguy

Peggy may well be the first and only true friend of either sex that Don Draper has ever had. She has shown previously that she can be trusted; now with her standing up to Don (just like a man would have) that she demands to be respected. She may still be an underling to him in the workplace, but he will never underestimate Peggy again.
They will enjoy a relationship of friendship without sexual tension which is rare everywhere, not just the workplace.
Peggy views the ad world through Don colored glasses. Such as after Marilyn died where she frankly says it was good the Marilyn/Jackie ad campaign didn't fly as they'd have to pull it, when all the other women in the office were crying about the death. And he noticeably appreciates her professionalism.
Peggy sees his easy power and status as a placeholder for where she wants to be, but she also sees Don as a real person much like the first Mrs. Draper.
Don confessed he had seen Peggy as an extension of himself. Probably she's more like a bright mirror to his dark and troubled one, and he feels good about himself with her around.
Peggy's character is twinned to Don's: a certain innocence about some things, a creative adaptability and advertising skill, a penchant for frank appraisal and direct statements, a focus on success, and a subtle yet all-encompassing and a slightly endearing need to be needed and wanted.
This relationship seems poised to mature - though not romantically - as both characters grow during the challenge of whatever the next season holds
Don is Peggy's mentor. In Season 1, amidst all the agency's talk of Peggy ("the new girl") as a sex symbol, she confusedly tries to make a pass at Don. He stops her cold. He lays down a few ground rules for her, and starts her understanding of his expectations.
Peggy looks up to Don and respects his position and ability. Don, who from season 1 was guarding against Pete Campbell undermining him, probably appreciates her loyalty. Don also separates himself from the immature unprofessionalism of his male staff right from season 1 -- by not going to Pete's bachelor party. Similarly, Peggy is not part of that crowd.
It is no surprise that in Season 3 he tells Peggy that he sees her as an extension of himself. If it weren't so disrespectful of her own individuality, it would have been a compliment.
But the bottom line is that there's a professional rapport there. I don't see ANY sexual tension or attraction.
Peggy: Season 1, makes a pass at Don in the confusion of the agency staff always referring to her physically rather than professionally. Upon being rebuffed, is told what is expected of her. Looks up to Don and respects his position and ability. She appreciates that he gives her a chance and, unlike the other men there, never considered her a conquest. (Season 1, she is upset that they are all seeing her as a conquest and not just being civil.)
Don: As of season 1, is guarding against Pete Campbelll’s ambition. Also not part of the male staff’s culture -- he neither approves of how they treat Peggy, nor does he attend the bachelor party for Pete. Peggy is similarly outside their world. While Pete can’t be trusted because of his ambition, Peggy can be trusted because she is ambitious and loyal to Don. In season 3, he relates to Peggy so much that he considers her an extension of himself.
There is no romantic or sexual connection – just a workplace friendship.
I think they will end up together at the end of the show. The show seems to be setting up for it. There were little inklings of it here and there throughout the all three seasons. They have always been there for each other. It's definitely an iceberg thing, very much under the surface with it showing only obliquely. Remember you heard it here first, the two of them will be together at Series Finale.
Diana, I agree completely. There is no romance or sexual connection there at all.
Peggy and Don are kindred. After the hospital visit, he sees her as someone else shedding the weight of their past in order to become new, rise up, and get what they want a'la Dick Whitman... Not being privvy to Don's story, Peggy doesn't know that this fundamental need to leave their humble origins behind is what makes her and Don so similar, but Peggy is held by loyalty. She wanted to cover for Freddy after his little accident, because she appreciated that he gave her a start in copywriting, how much more would she not do for Don? Don, who got her up and out of the mental ward. Don, who actually gave her the promotion and the raise and the Clearasil account. He is her mentor, surrogate father and icon of what she thinks she wants to be. Of course she'll forgive a little yelling. There is absolutely no romance, only wishful mirroring on both parts.
I think Peggy respects Don because he is a strong person and he knows her more than anyone in the office. She sees he has a clear vision of what he wants so she wants to follow him.Don knows peggy is good at her work and he can trust her the most out of anyone. So yes there is feelings there but more like a brother and sister thing.
Its hard to say if she really loves him or not
