Mad Men Season 3 Interviews - Matthew Weiner and the Cast
Just because Season 3 is over doesn't mean you can't still revel in all things Mad Men. Be sure to revisit the interviews from this past season to get a second look at what series creator Matthew Weiner and the show's stars had to say.
Here's a taste:
• "... the actors are so good I don't have to limit my imagination, and I never have to write around anyone." -- Matthew Weiner (Series Creator)
• "This is a guy that is not well-equipped for being emotionally available, or being mature or giving in a relationship." -- Jon Hamm (Don Draper)
• "It was my biggest fear to do the whole 'pushing out a baby' scene. Luckily we didn't have to do that, but I tried to think of something really painful." -- January Jones (Betty Draper)
• "Among the people in the office, I don't think he's considered the bad guy; he's considered a nuisance." -- Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell)
• "What's great about some of the stuff they write for Peggy is that a lot of it is what we've all done or what we can see ourselves doing." -- Elisabeth Moss (Peggy Olson)
• "I'm really not a singer, and I don't speak French, so I was just trying to keep my head above water." -- Christina Hendricks (Joan Holloway)
• "You sign on at the beginning, you're not sure where the character goes, but you need to find a way to go at it 100 percent." -- John Slattery (Roger Sterling)
• "They're very generous with me with comedy, which I appreciate. The writers play to all of our strengths." -- Rich Sommer (Harry Crane)
• "I think everyone was wanting Sal to have some kind of experience, to recognize these feelings he has, and act on them." -- Bryan Batt (Salvatore Romano)
• "The scene in the elevator where Ken and Pete are being so magnanimous with each other was hilarious to read..." -- Aaron Staton (Ken Cosgrove)
• " I have such a baby face. I can't stand it. So inevitably I grow the beard back just to regain some sense of masculinity." -- Michael Gladis (Paul Kinsey)
• "... sometimes some of the cast say, 'Did that really happen?' Or 'Is that the way they dressed?' I'll say, 'Oh yes.'" -- Robert Morse (Bert Cooper)
• "I imagine Lane is always aware of presenting a certain demeanor to the public -- to the troops, if you like." -- Jared Harris (Lane Pryce)
• "I think getting in bed with any stranger is always a little nerve-wracking whether it's in real life or whether it's just dramatic license." -- Mark Moses (Duck Phillips)
• "... basically what you have is a camera on a stick and two actors in a room. It's like being under a pop-up, there's no place to hide." -- Chelcie Ross (Conrad Hilton)
• "I think Trudy is one of the best wives on the show. I loved how they've come together in their marriage this season. " -- Alison Brie (Trudy Campbell)
• "It's always an adventure when we go for costume fittings, that's for sure." -- Patrick Cavanaugh (Smitty)
• "What I also found out is that Matt specifically writes all my lines. I just look at them, and think, 'How the hell does he come up with that?' ... That's how my father speaks!" -- Edin Gali (Kurt)
• "Gene is a very tough old-world guy. He's about insinuating himself and imposing himself in a situation." -- Ryan Cutrona (Gene Hofstadt)
• "I always say Los Angeles is the place where British people come to exceed their worth. It's quite true of everything: The British accent does open doors." -- Ryan Cartwright (John Hooker)
• " She thinks with her heart, which I feel is a rare thing. She's a bit odd in that world: Peace, love, all these aspirations..." -- Abigail Spencer (Suzanne Farrell)
• "Everything is fun about Sally. She's such an adventurous girl." -- Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper)

I really appreciate all the extras, especially the interviews and production stills from each episode.
As a true maddict, I watch, re-watch and analyze every episode, and I am glad that Matt Weiner, et al, understand my need for additional information and insight.
That the actors love the show and work together as a family to produce it is evident in the end result--the best show on TV period.
There's a link through Maureen Ryan's column, The Watcher, at the Chicago Tribune to a great interview with Matthew Weiner on the Daily Beast.

I read Matt Weiner's interview with the Daily Beast, and he basically says he doesn't know what Season 4 is going to look like. He also said that he knew from the start that the old Sterling Cooper would not survive the run of the series. I am so excited about the posibilities ahead but a little fearful, too. I know more change is inevitable given the era, but the viewers have a lot invested in the characters the like best/least,etc.
We have to believe that MW knows them better than we do.
He did say that he does not write to give the audience what it wants. I respect this, and after all he is the mastermind behind the series so we have to trust him.
I just hope he can keep the secrets of the first episode of S4 as well as he did those of the finale. It was an incredible episode only made more so because of the secrecy. He should do a fake preview for the media, reviewers, etc. because of all the leaks and then completely blindside everyone.

I'm a big fan of Matthew Weiner.
