Porter Hovey Wins Banana Republic Casting Call for Mad Men Season 4
Freelance photographer Porter Hovey knows how to take a good picture. She also knows how to pose for one. And because of that, she's the winner of Banana Republic's Mad Men Casting Call, a competition that thousands entered. AMCtv.com talked to Hovey in honor of her big win and got the lowdown on what comments her pic generated (and whether she sees herself as a Jackie or a Marilyn).
Q: How did you put the look together?
A: My sister and I, we did it together. We had the vintage pram, and I thought: This is the perfect opportunity to use it. My sister and I did a vintage baby clothes sale last summer and my ex-boyfriend bought the pram in Virginia and brought it up on the Chinatown bus. It's the nicest thing anyone has ever done -- because it's huge. The little jacket is from a thrift store down the street that specializes in clothes from the era. I have a bunch of clothes that are vintage and went through what would be most appropriate for this character.
Q: Was there a particular character who inspired you?
A: I didn't want to copy any of the characters on the show, but be inspired. This mom from suburbs who came down to the city... I thought about that, and being disconnected from children -- a lot of themes that happened during the season. I was probably more inspired by Betty than anyone else.
Q: Do you consider yourself a Marilyn or a Jackie?
A: [Laughs] I've always had a fascination with the Kennedys, so I would lean more towards Jackie. Probably because I'm more conservative and formal about how I dress.
Q: Where did you stage your photo?
A: Right outside the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. I got a lot comments because I was in the full outfit. I got a lot of people saying, "Oh my god, you're the coolest mom," and then they'd look into the baby carriage and see it only had cameras and cigarettes.
Q: Do you have a favorite outfit from the show this season?
A: I loved Betty when she was in Italy. Probably because it was so different from the rest of her outfits, so it really stood out. I love all of her Capri pant looks -- it's nice to see the difference between that and what you would wear to the office. I love it all. It's really hard to choose one favorite.
Q: You took an early lead in the standings. Were you surprised at all by how people were responding to your photo?
A: It was maybe the most amazing experience, just to see the outpouring of support. When I first entered, it was done as a fun thing. I thought, "Oh, I'll email a few friends, and see where it goes." When I started taking the lead, it got so exciting; every day it got bigger and bigger. Strangers started emailing me saying that they had it seen [the photo] on different blogs; people were voting every day. Even though the contest ended months ago, people ask every day about how it turned out.
Q: Do you think being from Brooklyn gave you any sort of home court advantage?
A: I don't know, the show is loved worldwide so it's hard to tell. I think everybody identifies with it -- you don't have to be from New York to understand what it's like to be working a 9 to 5 job, or live in suburbia, or any of that.

Congratulations Porter! Enjoy LA this summer and lay a big ol' smootch on Don for me!
*seething with envy!* ;- )
Congratulations Porter!! It's perfect that you won and you will be so great... what a blast!!
Great job Porter, congratulations!
Congrats Porter! It is a great shot... and frankly, I am just glad that AMC didn't completely forget about us. I felt fairly neglected after this contest was over! :)
Enjoy the experience!!! :)
YAY PORTER!!!! This is the best news I've had all day!! When I entered the photo contest, I did it mainly because your photo inspired me so much. I loved the sense that it emulated Mad Men, in capturing the period, but also the layers underneath-what wasn't being said. There was a real story there, and it was just a fantastic photo. You captured a story AND a mood. Just fantastic work. Your photo EASILY could've been included in the Season 3 photoshoot, it's THAT good. You were my favorite entry, and I'm flat out chuffed for you.
Right you are, Stagekiss, and btw, where's Part 5 of your time on Mad Men (you know the part where you get to kiss Jon Hamm...oh wait, that's my fantasy....oops....anyway, where is it? We're getting anxious!)
Porter, congrats to you, I stopped by your Polaroid Project area and enjoyed those photos so much...esp. the one with the old steamer trunks....if they could only talk!
You're very talented....enjoy your walk-on next season!
Miss Hovey... You are adorable! I visited your photography site. LOVE your Here Come The Bride series. Such an unconventional way to capture what matters most. Congrats on your big win! I'll be watching for you next season :)
The picture is fabulous. Very creative and authentic. It fits the Mad Men attitude perfectly. Hooray for the Team Jackie.
