1960s Handbook - The Misfits

At the end of the 1961 Western The Misfits, Clark Gable's grizzled wrangler frees the horses he'd intended to sell to the slaughterhouse. "I've just gotta find another way to be alive now," he says. "If there is one." It's a poignant comment in a movie so focused on the dying of the Old West. It's also a prescient statement on the film itself since its release was followed not long thereafter by the deaths of its leads.

Penned by legendary playwright Arthur Miller, directed by Oscar-winner John Huston and starring heavyweights Gable, Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift, The Misfits had all the makings of an instant classic. Instead, it's known mostly for its macabre aftermath: The day after production wrapped, Gable suffered a severe coronary thrombosis and died in the hospital. As for Monroe, she'd be dead of a drug overdose just a year and a half later. And while Montgomery Clift lived a few years longer, it was one of his last films. (The night Clift died, The Misfits was on TV. When asked if he wanted to see it, the actor replied, "Absolutely not." Supposedly, his last words.)

It's no surprise The Misfits took such a toll on its cast. Monroe (who was going through a divorce with Miller) spent the production depressed; Huston, often drunk, had to be pried from the gambling tables; Clift developed his own drug and alcohol dependency; and the aging Gable was so bored waiting around for everyone that he opted to do his own stunts -- one of which involved being dragged by a truck at 30 mph. On the last day of filming, Gable prophetically remarked, "Christ, I'm glad this picture's finished. She [Monroe] damn near gave me a heart attack."

The Misfits is the last completed picture for both Gable and Monroe. Although critics praised their performances, they complained the movie felt disjointed. ("There is a lot of absorbing detail in it," the New York Times said, "but it doesn't add up to a point.") Audiences agreed, and the most expensive black and white picture to date just barely earned back its production costs. Today, however, the haunting nature of Gable's and Monroe's swan songs has earned the picture cult status. Yesterday's flop has emerged as much more than a curio for its iconic stars.

Marilyn Monroe died of a heart attack? That's not right, is it?

Quite correct Zerelda -- it was a drug overdose. Not sure how that got in there... it's been corrected. Thanks!

I have always loved this movie for the characters creating a poignant collage of "just trying to stay alive." Each character embodies the good and evil in people who are just trying to live. All seem lost with no real roots. Much like Don Draper.

What an ugly picture of Marilyn Monroe!

I remember watching it when it first came out. Black and white, it had a dry, dusty look and I still remember the general plot - gathering wild horses. Monroe played a bimbo (as usual) who came to Vegas for a divorce and early in the film was trying to remember what to say to the judge, as I recall.

There was one, what I call, funny part. Monroe's character wasn't a rider but she came with Gable and Clift on the hunt. I forget why. Gable and Clift sat easily in the saddle as they rode while her bottom bounced up and down.

Having had a crush on Montgomery Clift and felt such empathy for Marilyn, I truly love this movie. They all 3 seem to be trying to make some sense out of the horrible hand they've been dealt, and had some culpability in the dealing of.
As I age, I'm beginning to be more and more convinced that her death was a horrible accident, not a suicide. When I take pills, it is hard to remember WHETHER I took them or not. And when you're trying to get to sleep and they STILL haven't taken effect, you can be convinced that you DIDN'T take them.
"People are always trying to take little bites out of me" is one of her most memorable quotes.

Good grief. No wonder Marilyn did herself in - from this photo.
She sure aged prematurely.

Glenn Danzig is an icon, the guy who brought crooning to punk rock with his bands The Misfits and Samhain, and revitalized metal with the band Danzig and the early ’90s hit song “Mother.”

Marilyn didn't swallow pills, There were none found in her stomach. She took them through a lower orifice. I think you would remember if you did that or not.

"Go bang your head against the wall." Come on! Even a mother in the 60's had more sensitivity than that. Or should have!pet creamation urns

When you know real people who are Muslims or christians, the stereotypes tend to melt away, at least so far as those individuals are concerned. And as you get to meet more Muslims or more christians, you realise it is ridiculous to regard everyone from a particular group or particular religion as if they were the same.http://www.daycareforms.org/illinois">Illinois Child Care Form

The Butterfield 8 reference in Season 2 "For those who think young" . Oh so subtle. The film is so bad its good and to think that Elizabeth Taylor won an Academy Award for that film.
