Odes to Joan and a Cover Story in LA Confidential This Week

Besides recaps of the eyebrow-raising Episode 7, there are some new profiles of cast members, not to mention a cover story in this month's LA Confidential.

LA Confidential features Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss on its cover. Both actors are asked to sum up the show in one sentence, a pretty interesting challenge if you think about it.

• The Boston Globe remarks that Season 3 has been "a string of cool, understated, bottled-up hours."

The LA Times concurs: "The pacing of Sunday's show was a return to some of the energy that imbued the first two episodes." So does the San Francisco Chronicle: "it was a textbook example of real brilliance, of how to capture the dark essence of main characters..."

• Also recaps from the Star-Ledger; the Wall Street Journal; Time magazine; the Chicago Tribune; the AV Club, Entertainment Weekly; and New York magazine.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talks about the show's design influence and points out a House Beautiful online feature on the '60s from the magazine's own archive.

The paper also waxes rhapsodic about Joan.

The SF Chronicle counts down movie and TV vixens; Christina Hendricks is second. "You know she can't wait to bust out of her predetermined role as the perfect doctor's wife."

• Speaking of which, Self magazine has a profile of Christina Hendricks, some of which you can find online here.

American Cinematographer's October issue features Mad Men and talks to DP Christopher Manley (no link yet, we'll update when it's live).

TV Guide referenced the show in its Oct. 5 issue in the Watercooler and Cheers and Jeers section. The cheers were for Christina Hendricks " for her deceptively subtle performance." (no link).

• Elisabeth Moss is interviewed by 411mania.com and when asked what TV show she'd like to be on, picks Breaking Bad. Aww.

St. Petersburg Times has a nice valentine about why they love the show.

Entertainment Weekly goes behind the scenes in this week's issue and give you the lowdown on some of the props.

This show is amazing. Even my 9 1/2 month old daughter is mesmerized by it.

Great actors and actresses. Great writers. Great stories. Just outstanding.

Only a few television shows transcend the genre and become iconic. Mad Men did this in its first season. Everything else is just icing on what I hope will be a very large and stylish cake.

Loved the photos in LA Confidential. That little smile/smirk and sly gaze of Jon's is iconic in itself. I bet he uses that one on his girlfriend to get his way. He can use it on me anytime!
Elizabeth should have worn that pink dress to the Emmys.
As for Jon's tux in the second pic, my date wore that same tux to the prom in 1975 but with a white ruffled shirt. He sure did not look like that though!

Wow, kathie....I agree....love his little sidelong glance (hammock pic).....sigh

Also, Elisabeth looks gorgeous in those photos.

And yes, JH could wear a burlap bag and look hot hot hot...zowie....whataman!

Love the articles on CH....I miss her so much!
Bring back Joanie!

I hope AMC will post pics of both weddings, if possible....love to see those! Please, Lily? Thanks!

.....Love the "maxi" pop art dress Elisabeth was wearing.....she looks smashing and they look great together.

I wonder how much farther Joan is going to have to sink, via being married to the floundering doctor.

Can't see him as a psychiatrist, pretty much ever, and that line she fed him "I married you for your heart" was a real surprise, since there has yet to be an indication that he has one.

(Or a personality.)

Through her (as usual) deft and discreet handling of Pete's dress issue, I predict Joan is going to come looking for a return favor at some point in the future.

Hi! everybody!
I still can't get on the Talk site so I have to comment here. Yes, Dry, I do wonder how much longer Joannie will put up with Greg, but I am afraid she'll stay with him just to have a husband until someone else comes along or Roger divorces Jane.
Me, too about the return favor; maybe being kept up on the goings on at SC/PPL and back in when "Moneypenny" self destructs!
Unless, and the plot does thicken, does it not? Don brings her in to help with Connie's constant demands. Now, there is a woman for Don Draper! She would appreciate him so much more than "never satisfied" Betty.
I loved this episode. It is really getting good, now and I can't wait till Sunday!
Is it just me or is Don falling back in love with Betty just as she is falling for Henry (ugh!!)? She looked just like Catherine Deneuve in the bar sequence and earlier in bed when she woke Don up to say she wanted ot go to Rome with him.
SC, I would die for fifteen minutes with Jon Hamm, and I am old enough to be his mother!

kathiemarie, Is 58 "old enough to be his mother" too? If so.....GUILTY! (Plus I don't care! ~~ ha!)

I can think of a great many things that can be accomplished in the space of 15 minutes, can't you?

SC, I am glad there are others in my age group who think impure thoughts about the luscious Mr. Hamm. I am 52 and was sort of ashamed of myself. Now that I know I have company, I don't feel so alone.
Although I would not turn down much more time, I do believe I could think of a few things to take up 15 minutes!
