iPhone Exclusive Video - Pete Campbell's Admirable Admiral Initiative
Another video exclusive for iPhone users: Vincent Kartheiser talks about Pete Campbell's initiative for Admiral Television. And while the suits at Admiral (and Sterling Cooper) might not have been so jazzed at the idea of integrated advertising, we of course know Pete was in the right. (After all, this is the guy who came up with direct marketing.)
Power up your iPhone for a behind-the-scenes look at Pete's admirable Admiral pitch.

Man alive you guys are making me crazy with the iPhone exclusive... SERIOUSLY!!! I don't have an iPhone and won't be getting one until Verizon offers them... does that mean I am out of luck???
Regarding AMCtv's Mad Men: In the 70's, while at Howard U, studying drama, one of my dreams, as a playwright, for the future of Black American pride, was being on an airline and having to hear an irate republicanseque upper mid-class white gentlemen belly-ache about there being no Jet or Ebony magazines on board--imagine that.
You might look at my picture their and assume my next thoughts. But no, my thoughts are one of economics. As I watched your current, 9/13/2009, episode where blacks and white women can't get ahead, where negro publications like Ebony & Jet loose ads because whites don't want to be associated with products that blacks homogenously admire and purchase. I am not upset that either that was then. But, I look upon you now, Mad Men, and the number of black actors you don't employ and I wonder curiously are you under the same scrutiny like back then. You might think you're running commentary by tapping into these "dated" issues, but this "current" issue of unemployment would be you. Or, like this current episode, do you have a political gun to your head?
...As long as you are sleeping at night, that's all that matters.
Very good, Noble, you have made your point abundantly clear. I agree with you to some degree, but think about the show itself, upper middle class characters in the early 1960's. Women aren't really wearing pants yet. Did you chime in on Roger's black face performance of My Old Kentucky Home? Now, things are more equal, people of all ethnic backgrounds are treated just as badly. The civil rights movement is slowly winding it's way in, I have a feeling this will be more prevalent as the season continues. I would go on, but I'm tired. Men and women of all ethnic backgrounds can't get ahead, women still make 30% less than men, so go figure. I could also go on about this, nitpicking it to death, but I just sit back and enjoy the show. I like the inner turmoil of Don and the evolution of Peggy and Peter (separately, not together). I take an hour on Sunday night to admire the costumes and hairstyling and the grace of the women and the personalities of the characters of Mad Men. I'm sure there's a thread somewhere or you could start one. It would be interesting to see the dialog.
The only bone I have to pick with AMC is...what is up with these iPhone exclusives?
You go, Pete! At least he's tapping into a market and not just ignoring an entire group of people based on race. As Paul said, "The consumer has no color."
Finally the show is dealing with one of the core issues of the '60's, which continues to impact us today; RACE. I admired Pete's position to sell the client on facts! Amazing today, how many brands still have the same perpective Admiral had. There are countless of brands promoting no "urban dictate." What's even more amazing, so do agencies. Walk through any major agency today and you will be hard press to find that many people of color. Having worked for big agency and major brands all my adult life, always in the development of creative and strategy, people of color are an after-thought and never incorporated on the front end. We may criticize Admiral for their lack of vision and blame it on the '60's. But have times really changed that much? Hey Pete, as Roger stated, you're the MLK of the ad game! If you won't stand for anything, you'll fall anything...MLK
Yes, DoubleDon, you are out of luck without the iPhone. Apple went to Verizon first to pitch the iPhone and they refused...silly them - AT & T was smarter and took them up on it. Until that changes, oh well!
Noble: What we're caught up in here is the quandary of having to depict rank discrimination -- less hiring, lousier jobs -- against "negroes" in 1963 in a production utilizing "Blacks" 45 years later. No way around it that, in terms of actors selected, fewer Black actors are needed to depict fewer negro characters.
They say "politics makes strange bedfellows." I guess this is a situation where historical-political statements in movies make strange role depictions. Sorry -- but it feels like everyone's heart IS in the right place.
That same year -- 1963 -- my own life demonstrated some of this strange dichotomous behavior. It was the year I transferred schools after my sophomore year in college: earlier in the year, attending Emory University -- in Atlanta -- I found myself parading around with signs protesting in favor of allowing Dr. King to speak to the student body. (It happened; it was inspirational and great.) Move ahead a few months, and as a junior in my new school, the University of Pennsylvania -- in Philadelphia -- I found myself parading around with signs in favor of allowing George Wallace to speak to the student body, on the basis of fair freedom of speech. (It happened; I've totally forgotten what said.)
Noble purposes sometimes demand nominally contradictory and surface-level unattractive behavior.. .
Mad Men is a terrific, realistic show. Let's let it stay that way.
My husband and I were intrigued by the first two seasons of Mad Men. The writing was superb; however, this season we feel that has changed and things have veered off track. The episodes seem disconnected. The one on 9/13/09 was the worst to date with at least half of it spent on Betty's labor and delivery. With all the fascinating characters and potential for stories in the office, why spend so much time on this one event? This series has really taken off and captured the interest of viewers. I hope the writers get back to the original concept that made the show so unique.
We've also noticed the use of current catch phrases like "knock off," "in a good place right now" and others which were not relevant to that period. The writers are too meticulous for these to be a mistake. Perhaps they are being used to reel in more viewers; however, to stay true to that time period, the dialogue should also be decade appropriate.
Wow thanks for those behind the scenes for iPhone. I was searching for some video related to Pete's Campbell's Admiral initiative, because my family really love Mad Men series a lot. Now I will be able to watch it even using my iPhone. Thanks one more time for posting this valuable material here and I will be definitely waiting for some more iPhone stuff from you in the nearest future. Thanks.
