Hot Topics - Sal and the Bellhop

mad-men-new-mugs.jpg

AMCtv.com awards the Talk forum and blog commenters quoted in our weekly "Hot Topics" post with prizes like a Mad Men mug or a Mad Men poster (limit one per person).

There's certainly been no dearth of discussion in the Talk Forum. Opinions of "Out of Town" were registering before the episode finished airing. One especially hot topic: Sal's encounter with the hotel bellboy. Some viewers thought it went too far; others argue it was no different from Don and Bobbie's meeting outside the washrooms at Lutece. Here's a sample:

• "Loved the way the writers went "head-first" ( so to speak ) into Sal's sexuality issues and the scene with the bellhop was VERY hot..." -- MADmen Oceanside BC

• "You cannot show show two men passionately kissing and then one of them going down the shorts of another and have a hit show!!! Someone needs to tell the execs that 95% of America does not want to see that!" -- bodielgt

• "I'm not sure why so many people are shocked about the scene with Sal. I mean we've seen Don in explicit scenes (remember him and Bobbie outside of the restroom at Lutece?) and we've even seen Betty doing about the exact same thing as Sal and the bellboy with her fling at the bar." -- DoubleDon

Log onto the Talk forum to join in this conversation or start a Mad Men topic of your own. As always, your comments throughout the blog are welcome.

Congratulations, DoubleDon, you won a mug! I know you have been wanting one, and it looks like they have a new travel mug available....either that or an oddly shaped tea pot....maybe it's a tea pot in honor of the Englishmen now at Sterling Cooper.

"Moneypenny, bring me my elevenses. I'm going to spend a penny while you wait for the water to boil."

Congrats, love the cool new mug design, you're right, z...they do look like travel mugs (teapots?!) hmmmmm.

Hard choice between one of those or that great new poster!

Enjoy!

Awww that mug-teapot thing is so swish!

Thanks Z! Its a sticky wicket though because I've already won a pen... wonder if they'll cut me a break with the "limit one per person".

At the risk of being lumped in with bodielgt (whose statistics I challenge) I'm not so sure you can directly compare the Lutece scene from Season 2 or Betty and her fling with the Sal and the bellboy. We're used to seeing flagrant heterosexual acts on television. We're desensitized to them. But I can count on one hand the number of homosexual acts I've seen in 30+ years of television watching. To suggest one is the same as the other is to overlook the very real cultural and contextual differences.

That said, I'd point out that one doesn't have to "want to see" explicit homosexual scenes to appreciate their relevance to the plot and character development. I do believe that showing such aggressive sexual acts perpetrated on Bobbie at Lutece reveals much about Don's character that seeing them disappear into a bathroom stall does not. Same with showing Sal's ecstatic yet awkward exchange... The details, as uncomfortable as they may make the viewer, are vital. And they are bound to make some viewers uncomfortable.

user-pic

On the level of sexual acts they were all similar. Granted, homosexual acts are not common on television but we are talking about a show that has all along experienced us to "shocking" behavior. Incessant smoking and drinking... even while pregnant, cheating, sex out of wedlock, wearing plastic bags on heads, dead babies, babies given away, pot smoking, slapping other people's kids, violation of doctor patient confidentiality, what else am I leaving out? I suppose my point is, although the scene with Sal and the Bellhop is uncomfortable, I don't feel that it should have "blown away" the viewers as much as it did and the act itself is no different than Betty and the Fling and to me, not as shocking as Don shoving his hand inside of Bobbie Barrett at Lutece because we've all known Sal is gay and, it's bound to happen. But then again, I think people are free to be who they are and if you "want to have sex with the man, not the woman" then who am I to stop you and it is a part of life now just as it was in April of 1963.

I'm so sick of Sal and the bellhop. Hopefully in future episodes, if they MUST continue this storyline, they'll just show a curtain moving or an ocean wave like they use to do in the old movies.

user-pic

Loves Mad Men - old movies are just that - old movies. You can't expect a modern TV show to use old movie cutaways to "mask" a scene. MM will continue this storyline, so I suggest you have your hand on the remote at all times. You may get shocked again!!

As a retired flight attendant I could tell the producers did not research the bar scene with the flight crew. Flight Crews are not allowed to drink in uniform. They wouldn't show up in a bar in uniform. We wear our layover clothes. Not a believable scene. Otherwise, I enjoyed the episode but I am getting a little tired of Don's constant playing around. This episode needed a little more than that. Didn't grap you.

Betty was told that Sally broke the suitcase lock with Don's hammer.

OMG! don't know how my comment go posted here! I was signed in on Talk and came over here...tried to post to the 1963 trivia game and had to re-sign in...then was messaged that there was an error - twice. So I opted to change my password and thought I posted my comment in the right place. Talk about confusing!!!

As long as I'm here, Congratulations to all the winners!

For some reason I was much more shocked at the rape scene between Joan and the doctor than the one between Sal and the bellboy. One was a violation the other was a willing connection. IMHO

GO DOUBLEDON! :)

Congrats!!! (And I covet your mug...)

This is a weird double standard - it's ok to see a woman, such as Joan, be raped by her fiance. But it's not ok to see Sal and the bellboy? Well, I look forward to Sal's storyline developing. And wasn't Sal's expression on the flight home, the one of relief and respect, towards John, interesting? This says a lot of how men put other men on pedestals for being a "macho man", being unfaithful and permiscuious.

Wow, I want one o' them spiffy new black mugs!

I love my "old" ceramic one, but, those are so cool and (appear to be) unbreakable!

I have to use mine sparingly just because I'm afraid I'll break it!

Enjoy your prizes whatever you guys choose.

The fact that 95 percent of America doesn't want to see it is a great reason to put it in. It was a great and very intense scene. Great episode.

It is edgy - that is why I like this shew.
The husband/wife rape in the office. Joan is holding back on her old man? It was so
not like her, and her hubby is too tired in bed. I don't think he likes in the bed sex.
I wonder how many times Joan + the big bad boss and that is how it goes. Abuse on women is the standard.

The elevator boy and Sal - had to COME OUT, we all knew about Sal anyway.

The way he fixed THE SAUCE for the blond co-worker who now is TEAMED UP with Petie. Mama-mia - and they both are italian.

I was actually glad and even somewhat relieved for Sal ! The best part was that he didn't have to make a fool of himself like the stewardess. It's nice to be wanted atleast then you know that you exist.

To: Zanadu

Why can't I expect the show to mask a scene? That's just ridiculous. They're doing everything else from a by gone era.

How do you know what storyline will continue? Are you a writer for the show?

Why would I have my hand on the remote?

I never said I was shocked. I'm just sick of the boring storyline. The show would be good without it.

Must EVERY show have a homosexual storyline??? I'm going to say it! I was disgusted with Sal and the bellboy. I don't want to see two women going at it either. Overkill for shock value and this most excellent show doesn't need it!!!
Come on, let's leave Sal in the closet like a man (or woman) in his position IN the 60's would be! I also agree, lesbian was not a word used then. Actually, I don't get the whole line coming from Betty's lips. What's going on with you people? I didn't like the rape scene of Joan either. Please, please, stop tinkering with my show. You were doing - well, just splendid! If it ain't broke........

Must EVERY show have a homosexual storyline??? There's a network specifically for that. I'm going to say it! I was disgusted with Sal and the bellboy. I don't want to see two women going at it either. Overkill for shock value and this most excellent show doesn't need it!!! Yes, homosexuals exist. Always have, always will. .As Joan would say "I get it." Frankly, I am sick of homosexuality being shoved down my throat (no pun intended).

60's gal your head is in the sand...people were not always in the closet. Sexuality was a topic of conversation - the Kinsey report was out in the fifties for God's sake. What makes the show great is that they don't back away from what were real topics that people dealt with at that time. Do they get it right all the time? No, but out of town was the way most gay men and women was the way they were able to express their sexuality while remaining "in the closet"..if that was their choice. Why is it okay for Don to screw everything that walks, but to show anything else is disgusting?? I found Don's behavior with Bobbie at Lutece or Joan's fiance raping her far more disgusting than two people mutually attracted to each other. Violence okay, homosexuality not? I don't think so.
