Reviews, Ratings and Cast Interviews All Around the Papers This Week
Now a week into the season, we're still catching up on the press coverage: Reviews, ratings, Q&As with the cast -- it's all in here!
• NY Times columnist Frank Rich talks about how Mad Men crashes Woodstock's birthday while writer Timothy Egan compares then and now.
• The Sacramento Bee spends some time with designer Janie Bryant.
• USA Today has special features about getting the Mad Men look into a modern wardrobe, and also takes a look at the ratings. Last Sunday, 2.8 million viewers tuned in, a 33 percent increase over last year's premiere. Episode 1's ratings were also reported in the LA Times, Wall Street Journal and Associated Press among other outlets.
• More reviews: Philly Inquirer, Newsday, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Time magazine.
• Also in Time: John Slattery lays out some of his favorite things. Not linked, but among the highlights: Wilco, Giorgione Restaurant in NYC, and Mary Stuart on Broadway.
• The NY Daily News has its own Q&A with "silver fox" Slattery.
• Variety looks at the Emmy contenders in the writing category. With four out of five nominees from Mad Men, chances look good for the show, but Variety weighs the pros and cons of each nomination.
• Variety also notes that many of the Emmy-nominated scribes (including Matthew Weiner) switch between comedy and drama. Another pre-Emmy story looks at how the nominees are juggling their press requests.
• Speaking of which, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram talks to Elisabeth Moss, and so does the Boston Herald.
• The Chicago Tribune has a lengthy chat with Jon Hamm.
• Forbes has an article about the authenticity of Mad Men and how that leads to brand success. The takeaway: "Credibility is essential to engendering trust."
• TV Guide (Aug. 24, not linked) lists the Mad Men Yourself game as a "Cheer" in its Cheers and Jeers column. Also in that issue: January Jones tells TV Guide she's checking out Nurse Jackie. No link but she says: "It's just really dark and edgy, and I think Edie Falco's brilliant."
• OK! provides a handy primer for catching up (Aug. 31 issue, no link), while Star says: "those clothes, those hairstyles -- all so perfect!" (also Aug. 31, no link)
• Emmy magazine compares Mad Men and Entourage. (Not linked, index only.)
• The NY Post looks at some present day Mad Men, including what campaigns they've worked on.
• The Denver Post had some ideas on how to celebrate the show's return. Maybe something to think about for Episode 2!
• The NY Daily News talks to last year's contest winner, Justin Zell about his walk on.
