Mad Men Gets the Full Vanity Fair Treatment; Cast Post Their Playlists on iTunes

With just a week to go before the premiere, there was no shortage of Mad Men news in the papers these past few days. That means profiles, reviews and even a handy episode by episode breakdown for anyone just joining in. Take a look:

Mad Men gets the Vanity Fair treatment, complete with Annie Leibowitz photography (like this image, at right). Settle in to watch a video of the Mad Men photo shoot, or read a Q&A with January Jones and Jon Hamm. Those pieces were picked up elsewhere including New York magazine.

NY Mag's own coverage of Mad Men includes a profile of Christina Hendricks, a feature on Vincent Kartheiser and a breakdown of Jon Hamm's interview with ESPN's Sports Guy. Not to mention, a very succinct episode by episode synopsis of the series up to this point

Esquire has put together a photo gallery of the "Minor Women of Mad Men." (Their words, not ours; there are no minor parts!) That means the actresses behind Trudy, Rachel and Hildy, among others. Also, a major photo spread of Christina Hendricks.

You can find photos of the fellas in TV Guide's gallery.

• If you've checked out the iTunes store in the last week, you'll have noted Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, John Slattery and Jon Hamm are among the celebrities that have shared their playlists. Hamm reveals he usually puts together a playlist before each new season to inspire or inform him of his character, and confesses that for Season 2, his list was "strangely all Usher." Perhaps January Jones does the same? We like that she has Icelandic band Sigur Ros on hers, since that just fits with Betty's "My people are Nordic" statement.

The Wall Street Journal gives us some insight about the women of Mad Men -- the ones behind the screen including Robin Veith and Maria Jacquemetton, names which be familiar to anyone who has watched the credit sequence over and over.

• Newsweek goes behind the scenes with an article and video. John Slattery teases that it's 1976 and that he wants "to see these guys in platform shoes and chests full of medallions."

Minneapolis-St.Paul Magazine talks to Vincent Kartheiser who answers questions like whether Pete's sense of entitlement has diminished.

The LA Times spends some time with set decorator Amy Wells who takes them shopping with her.

• The show's premiere gala in L.A. was covered by a number of outlets including Variety (click to check out the photo gallery), while Entertainment Tonight, and the LA Times have video coverage of Jon Hamm, John Slattery and Melinda McGraw.

News that Mad Men would be parodied on Sesame Street next season inspired this casting gallery. Grover as Pete Campbell? Interesting.

•  Still making news: NPR delves into the Mad Men Yourself avatar maker; the Washington Times talks about the Banana Republic campaign.

The Examiner.com discusses the look of the show, and how it depicts "these well-dressed creatures in the glow of amazing lighting and panning from the camera to catch their every smirk and glare."

Rolling Stone (link not live yet) previews the premiere episode, calling the series "the most eagerly anticipated show of the season."

The Boston Globe looks at how Woodstock killed the fashion we have come to love of the Mad Men-era.

• Delta's Sky magazine has a profile of Elisabeth Moss. No link, but it's the Aug. 2009 issue if you're flying anywhere. One tidbit, when Moss travels, she's a huge fan of "bringing nothing" since she usually doesn't bother to read all the stuff she's brought with her.

• No links, but InTouch gives the Season 3 premiere four out of five stars; Us Weekly gives it three out of four.

Lovely photos of Jon and January in Vanity Fair

Can Jon Hamm get any hotter? I hope he's around a long time - I want to see him age gracefully - like Cary Grant.
