The Return of Cocktail Culture and Post-Nomination Reflections in the Papers This Week
With the premiere date fast approaching, there's no shortage of Mad Men in the news:
• Mad Men gets mentioned in the venerable New Yorker. If you haven't already checked out our behind-the-scenes video of the marketing campaign, check out the Talk of the Town piece which also breaks it down.
• GQ gets Matt Weiner to drop a few hints. (Or as they point out -- sort of.)
• Rich Sommer talks to Televisionary post-Emmy nomination and while he doesn't reveal specifics about the new season, he does say, "It pretty much kicks down the door right away." Also: The crew plays on Xboxes in their down time.
• Bryan Batt speaks to Access Hollywood and mentions how one woman told him, "I'm actually -- literally -- playing her father."
• AOL's TV site chats with Elisabeth Moss post-nomination: Fiance Fred Armisen broke the news to her.
• Further on January Jones' Interview cover story. People magazine gives some highlights like: She wanted to be a storm chaser at one point. The Interview story is also picked up in the NY Post and MTV.com.
• Life & Style Weekly interviews Broadway star Constantine Maroulis who not only says that his "can't miss" TV show is Mad Men, he says January Jones is "perfect in her role." Similarly, OK! chats with Molly Simms who says Mad Men is her favorite show. (No link, both are Aug. 3 issues.)
• In TV Guide, Matt Roush breaks down the Emmy nominations, and gives props to Jon Hamm for "double dipping" in comedy (30 Rock) as well as drama. That's not online but we do have links to stories in the Cleveland Plain Dealer ("Emmys get it right") and the Detroit News and Free Press (Christina Hendricks is down as an "unsung hero").
• The Boston Globe mentions that a local watering hole will be celebrating the Aug. 16 premiere by offering a prize to the best Mad Men costume of the night.
• The Washington Times talks about the return of cocktail culture, and mentions a class "How to Drink Like Mad Men." Also, in case you're getting thirsty reading this roundup, there are recipes for classic drinks like Tom Collins and the Old Fashioned.
• In Style and the Examiner's website both give details about the Casting Call contest with Banana Republic.
• NY Magazine's Vulture blog unwraps the press kit for Season 3 with much reverence.

Cocktail culture has always been around...Mad Men is just helping enhance it!
The Mad Men crew play Xbox in their downtime? That is NOTHING short of music to my ears. I want to see Harry Crane and some of the other Sterling Cooper boys duking it out in a game of Halo!
Well, in less nerdy news, I'm super excited that the Mad Men buzz factor is picking up again thanks to the Emmy noms (congrats again on 16, lads!), and very great timing on AMC's part, given that the premiere is drawing ever closer.
Oh hey, August 16th... 16 nominations... ;)
I have a technical question. I have mac IBook and I'm having trouble playing the Season 3 videos. The ads play okay but the videos are choppy and quit half way through the video. I didn't have any problems with the Season 2 videos. Help!! Is anyone else having this problem? Can it be fixed?
It is true that we have lost appreciation for the more elegant aspects of life in this digital age. Mad Men brings it all back, better than ever.
I am so jealous. Why not a fan contest so we who really appreciate the show could have a chance to get one?
Oh, man, I want that press kit. They wouldn't even have to give me the whole thing, just the book of pictures and the copy of Episode 1 of Season 3. I haven't a clue what that thing is that looks like a lighter. How galling to know there are people out there who have actually seen the complete first episode of Season 3.
z, that "thing" is an EB something or other....it's posted about on a thread somewhere else around here....I guess it's some type of memory doohickie that plugs into one's computer?
Sorry, not tech-savvy much at all....I know just enough about computers to get myself into trouble.
I'm with you, z and kathiemarie....just give us that picture book and the Ep 1 and we're happy...we Maddicts don't ask much.....
USB device.....I meant to type....
My hubby has one of those USB thingies he uses on his business laptop....he just told me he couldn't survive without it....important little gadgets, those USB's!
I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad that Madmen is coming back.... Have been waiting and watching for any info to see when the New Season would start..WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I love the dresses for the women it reminds me of my mom...she was classy too!
Yes, Zerelda, it probably should not, but it kills me that there are people out there who have not only seen the S3 opener, but who are also leaking info about it. And as for that press kit, I know I have to let it go, but true fans would kill for a chance at that kit! Yeah,it is a thumb drive that you plug into your computer to save files or back-up your files. I look forward to Z's and SC's insights during the coming season. Hurry August 16!
Back atcha, kathie!
You are a Maddict for sure....you got it bad, kid....just like the rest of us poor addicted souls! Yes, it's an addiction....what else could you call it?...but, it's not bad for one's health (except for all this waiting/anxiety!) and it's getting closer and closer to our brand new 13-episode"fix"! Thirteen lucious new episodes to dissect, chew on, and ruminate over....what could be better??
It's only 2 weeks! Thought it'd never get here, didn't you, fellow Maddicts?????
....luscious....sorry, got carried away thinking about the 16th!
