Mad Men

16 Nominations, the Show's Fearless Women, and Season 2 DVD Reviews Are in the Papers

It was a big week for Mad Men: The Season 2 DVD set hit stores which meant reviews aplenty, fashion watchers were covering the Banana Republic contest, and, oh yes, the show received 16 Emmy nominations. Here's a look at what made news, with links if we have 'em:

The Star-Ledger's Alan Sepinwall takes a look at Season 2 on DVD. He points out that the features are femme-focused this time (a history of feminism, real-life '60s fashion) but says the real reason to have the collection is for the show itself. Praise too in the Hartford Courant, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the NY Daily News, Entertainment Weekly and even London's Telegraph among others.

Saatchi chair Bob Seleert blogs in the Huffington Post about what Mad Men gets right and what's changed in the advertising industry over the years.

The LA Times talks to Patrick Fischler aka Jimmy Barrett who says that a lot of people go up to him thinking they were classmates in high school. Interesting tidbit: His sister-in-law is Julia Louis Dreyfus.

The New York Times talks about the Banana Republic contest and other Mad Men Season 3 promotions. The Banana Republic contest and tie-in is also mentioned on Stylelist, Racked and Examiner sites which point out mannequins will be dressed a la Mad Men and that shoppers will be able to pick up a style guide of the characters. Handy!

• Also in the Examiner, a piece about taking the Banana Republic contest entries up a notch and enlisting pro photographers and stylists to help you bring your A-game.

In Style talks to Janie Bryant about Season 3's wardrobe. (No link) A few updates to our favorite ladies: Betty will be sporting a more modern look; Peggy is still playing it conservative.

• January Jones is not only the cover girl for the August issue of Interview, she's profiled by Jack Nicholson. (Alas, no link.)

• Christina Hendricks is profiled in Cosmo as their fun fearless female for August. Nice bit of trivia on how she prepared for her role: "One of the first things I did was read [former Cosmo editor] Helen Gurley Brown's Sex and the Single Girl -- you know, about how to be the It Girl." (No link.)

Wesleyan's alumni magazine gets this quote from Matthew Weiner about Glenn Bishop and that scene with Betty and her lock of hair: "That really happened in Baltimore when I was 7 or 8 years old. I had a crush on my babysitter and wanted to see her naked."

• And lastly, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has a few quotes from Bryan Batt about the Aug. 16 season premiere. "In the first six episodes, I have two with really good storylines, and I think people who follow Sal are going to be very excited," he says.

That's one scary hairdo on the cover of Interview magazine! Looks like she had another "night to remember".

.....You try frying YOUR hair to a crisp!

How good is it SUPPOSED to look?

Kinda looked as if she had her lunch (and the next day's snack) packed away up in there...handy, I suppose!

Still, that gorgeous (if overly made-up in that pic) face is hard to beat.

That Wesleyan alumni article (Matt Weiner, Class of '87) is a very interesting read....incredible insight into why Matt is such a fantastic writer.....

I will always find it impossible to understand HBO's refusal to grab Mad Men when they had the chance.
Kudos to Christina Wayne at AMC for seeing what they refused to.
