Season 3 Debut Date and Emmy Buzz Gets Mad Men Mentions in Vanity Fair and Variety

With the Season 3 start date of Sun., Aug. 16 officially announced, and Emmy nominations just around the corner, Mad Men mentions are popping up everywhere:

Mad Men's Season 3 start date was news in TV Guide, TV Squad, the Newark Star-Ledger, Buzzsugar, Vanity Fair and the Chicago Tribune among others.

Rolling Stone talks to Matt Weiner about Season 3. Says Mad Men's creator: "All I can tell you is that I'm interested in how our successes turn out to be failures and our failures turn out to be successes."

• Tom O'Neil of the LA Times picks his Emmy front runners: Jon Hamm (along with Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston) is on his list for lead actor; January Jones and Elisabeth Moss represent in the actress category. In the supporting categories, he gives nods to John Slattery and Christina Hendricks with Vincent Kartheiser mentioned as a possible contender. (No link to the piece since it only ran in the print edition.)

• Meanwhile, Variety, while giving props to Elisabeth Moss and January Jones, classifies them as underdogs in the Emmy actress race. (But if Maddicts know anything, it's never to underestimate the ladies of Mad Men!) The trade also takes a look at the "flawed females" of television, including Betty Draper, described as a "tormented woman locked in a world where she was supposed to be grateful for a husband providing a privileged lifestyle."

• For the men's Emmy race, Variety talks to John Slattery in an article about actors and writers working in tandem to yield the best roles. Says Slattery: "Matt [Weiner] said one time that he didn't think Roger was as funny as he turned out to be." There's also a roundup of potential repeat nominees, including Hamm and Slattery.

Variety also takes a look at costume design in period shows and talks to Janie Bryant, among other designers. The piece mentions that Mad Men actresses wear vintage undergarments and Bryant points out: "That's a huge part of transporting actresses back in time and makes the clothes have period accuracy."

The New York Times's Emmy preview coverage last weekend included a profile of Elisabeth Moss. One bit of trivia: She keeps her ukulele at home. The Times took a look at costume design as well which meant an interview with Janie Bryant. Something to note: Don't underestimate the meaning of a pocket square.

• The Times' package also included a chart of who the paper's TV critics think deserve nominations: Mad Men for series, and Jon Hamm and January Jones in their respective categories.

The Hollywood Reporter also speaks to John Slattery about playing Roger Sterling... including how he broke the news to real-life wife Talia Balsam (Mona Sterling) that Roger was about to leave her.

TV Guide runs down its list of the top 100 TV episodes of all time and places Season 1's "Nixon vs. Kennedy" at number eight.

.....Excellent collection of articles.

I juggled feeling bitter about my lapsed Rolling Stone subscription, and their penetrating interviews (the blasted thing is NOT online), and being blown away by the Variety piece about the damaged female characters.

Definitely going to check out those shows.

And, Yay! Vinnie is finally getting the recognition he deserves!

Above and beyond - thanks!

Fab, good articles

I wish the newspaper and magazines in the uk, where like the ones in the america about talking Mad Men, you only find 1 or 2 of them do

Wow, that Kevin Pollack's Chat Show link (in the TVSquad article) to his interview with JH was soooooo good....(scroll down quite a ways)

It's kinda long (1 hr.) but great.

He went through the "George Clooney routine" as they called it, of being in-pilot-after-pilot-and-none-ever-'clicking', until he got Mad Men....I'm so happy for him....so deserving!

The link is down in the Comments section from "StillBash" or something like that....

.....That was a GREAT interview with Jon Hamm. Very funny, and a nice guy, too. Thanks a lot for catching that!

(Posting link again in case anyone else wants quick access..... http://kevinpollakschatshow.com/all-episodes/)

".....Sneaky, smelly water-hoarders....."

Hilarious!!

Jon's clearly paid the heavy dues in his field. His description of the grueling trials an actor endures (and the unlikely fluke of success for even the most talented) reminded me of a Norm McDonald stand-up joke from years ago, before anyone knew him.....about the sport of professional cliff diving.

He pointed out that there were basically just two places finishes - Grand Champion, and Stuff on a Rock.

I think that Kevin Pollack is a great interviewer...he listens (rare) and asks great questions.

Yes, Dry...it makes it so much more gratifying to be JH's fan when one sees how much he appreciates it all himself....so humble ~~ and yet sooooo adorable.

Go Jon!!!

.....It doesn't hurt that Kevin is in the entertainment business.

Jon's take on the SNL experience was fun. I'd heard it is a fast and crazy train ride to spend the week with those people, and found it pretty impressive that his "James Mason" was very last-minute and unrehearsed.

I've said it before, but I suspect comedy takes nerves of steel.

.....The Rolling Stone interview with Matt. It looks like the whole thing, but can't say for sure at the moment.

Season 2 Marathon!
June 13, 2009 By: Deborah Lipp

The Observer reports that a Mad Men Season 2 marathon will run on August 10, beginning at 7am.

Typically, AMC fails to have this on their schedule, announced on the Mad Men blog, or anywhere on the Mad Men page.

I wasn't able to access the schedule at all, so couldn't say if this issue will be rectified or not.

All Maddicts, you can use the link about TV Guide's top 100 episodes to leave a comment about where you think Nixon vs Kennedy should be ranked in their top 20. I did. I'm glad to hear about the marathon. Of course, AMC does not have it on their schedule yet. They know they have us at their mercy, and they torture us!
