Mad Men

Valentine's Day, Mad Men Style

As every good Maddict knows, Season 2's premiere episode takes place on Valentine's Day, 1962. Well, February 14 has come and gone, but here are five scenarios to get a little Mad Men love back in your life.

A Classic Night Out

In Season 2, Episode 1, "For Those Who Think Young," Don takes Betty to the Savoy hotel for dinner then upstairs to a suite. He wore a tux; she brought lingerie. Admittedly, things didn't exactly turn out as planned for the Drapers, but this formula generally works!

A Sterling Cooper Bromance
Roger and Don go out for an eight-martini lunch at the Grand Central Oyster Bar (Season 1, Episode 7, "Red in the Face"). Want to follow suit? February is oyster season, so eat 'em raw topped with a squirt of lemon. Further advice: Don't take the stairs afterwards.

Beach Rendezvous

For many single women, it's tough to get a guy to commit to a weekend getaway. Lower your expectations. As Bobbie Barrett herself says to Don (Episode 5: "The New Girl"), "I want to have you on the beach." Don't ask for more. And if you're headed out to Stony Brook, take a cab.

Taboo Office Romance

Flirting with a guy near the Xerox 914 but too scared to make the move? Enlist your single co-workers for an impromptu blowout. In Season 1, Episode 13 "Nixon vs. Kennedy," the Sterling Cooper staff fills a water cooler with crème de menthe. To avoid an HR intervention, be subtle. Sneak a bottle of Bailey's into the break room.

Sleep on a Bed Made of Money
In Season 1, Episode 7, "Babylon," Midge drags Don to the Gaslight with her beat boy Roy in tow. Both guys make digs at each other to impress the girl -- not your typical menage a trois. If you find yourself in a similar set up, pray that jazz band strikes up "My Funny Valentine."

I am loving these suggestions. Hilarious.

These are pretty good (I especially appreciated the Midge reference. Amazing character and wonder if she'll be back in Season 3?) I also notice there's no Pete Campbell in this post...think he had a pretty abysmal Feb 14th...

Love it, and I know how I wish I'd spent Valentine's...with a certain Mr. Draper! That said, I wonder what the significance of season 2 starting on V-Day was? I'd like a little more introspection, fellow Maddict!

I'm new to the wide world of Mad Men but am getting used to it quickly. Eight martinis? Is that possible? I guess I'll have to find out - not by drinking eight martinis I don't think but by checking out that episode. Whoah!

Maybe this is not politically correct (but that's probably ok since the entire show isn't PC), but I think Roger's tryst with one of the twins from casting in Long Weekend (S1E10) is a spectacular way to get a little Mad Men love back in your life. Just make sure you take some aspirin and Lipitor beforehand so you don’t suffer the same fate as Roger!

@ Dry Manhattan...."sniff, sniff..." something does "smell" familiar.
