The LA Times Says Michelle Obama Has Mad Men Style

In a piece praising Michelle Obama's inaugural attire, today's Los Angeles Times referenced Mad Men in their description of the First Lady's swearing-in ensemble by designer Isabel Toledo. "With their retro 'Mad Men' silhouette and of-the-moment yellow hue, the Toledo dress and coat proved that Obama can strike a balance between being conservative and taking risks," critiqued the paper.

I can't say I liked her ensemble myself.

It reminded me of either a tablecloth or an embossed bedspread.

The white gown at the Innaugural Ball was attractive, but nothing great.

Just my opinion...

I loved the ensemble, and also how comfortable she looked in it. As soon as I saw her, I made the Mad Men fashion connection. The accessories, the color, the fit--I thought it was perfect.

I agree SCfan I thought it looked like one of those chenille bedspreads. And it seemed hard to dance in as she had to keep holding it up so as not to get stepped on. Although I have read that it looked better in person with all the encrusted jewels on it.

Yeah, Chelsea, I think maybe folks should take into consideration how things photograph/televise when they choose their ensembles.

I just know I keep hearing/reading about how much "fashion sense" and "style" Michelle Obama has and I have yet to see it, myself. JMHO.

She seems like one classy lady, though, and I wish her and her family---esp. our New President!---only the best.

She has a Mad Men figure and I'm glad of that. I hope she'll bring back the womanly body. I'm so sick of seeing these minus-sized actresses with no hips and their fake big breasts.

I didn't vote for Obama, but I think the First Family will shape some new attitudes in this country. I love the fact that Grandma is going to live with them to help care for the girls. I love the fact that Michelle and Barack seem to genuinely like each other as well.

Yes, magsby13, I definitely noticed the looks they were giving each other during all those "first" dances at the Inaugural Balls...looked pretty genuine to me (affection, that is)

I hope the guy makes me wish I had voted for him.

God Bless and guide our new First Family!

I thought Mrs. Obama’s suit was both stylish and appropriate for the day. The color was elegant and hopeful (sunny). The fact that she chose an up and coming designer combined with “green” J. Crew gloves is all very symbolic. Her white Inaugural gown also expressed a new bond with our nation. I wonder if the MM writers have been working for Obama on their time off.
I worked on Madison Avenue as a receptionist during the Camelot years and at night I studied “Sales & Marketing” at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Just as then we are going to see (we already are) a major shift in fashion.
I must dig out that photo of me at Idyllwild airport. The wind is blowing and it is a beautiful shot of my lightweight gray sheath dress & matching coat, I’m holding the top of my white pillbox hat with my white leather gloves in my hand.
Thank goodness for the happy memories.

I thought both ensembles were just beautiful! I loved the gold and green, the texture of the gown, everything.

So 485 Madison are we then going back to a 60's style? Fine with me I think it's a cool look. Also agree with Magsby the womenly body is in my opinion more real. Those super skinny actresses do look sick and fake boobs are just fake boobs. What do the men think? I always think they look so frail.

Cute new pic SCfan. And don't worry about not voting for him. In one of Obama's speeches he said he would work to earn the confidence of those who didn't vote for him. Isn't it exciting to have a real President actually working for the American people not just his "party"! Let's hear it for change!!

I'm all for the man and his sweet family...I'm hoping this will be a case of the best man really did win.

Here's you you, Mr. Obama, Sir...and as I said before---I hope you make me wish I had voted for you--- and then give me the opportunity to do so 4 years from now.
