In San Fran, Chicago and Cleveland Press, Mad Men Is Number One
The San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune and Cleveland's Plain Dealer all recently listed Mad Men as the number one television show of the year. The Chronicle called it "brain candy" and "eye candy," "visually stunning" and "smartly nuanced," then went on to note how Season 2 "fleshed out the surrounding characters...particularly Don's wife, Betty," a sentiment echoed by the Tribune which said "men frequently yielded center stage to the show's frustrated, fascinating women, who turned in stunning performances".
Other publications to put Mad Men on their best-of-the-year lists include LA Daily News (number two with Breaking Bad at number four), The Star-Ledger (number three with Breaking Bad at number nine), Newsday (number nine), San Diego Union Tribune (number four), and The Salt Lake Tribune (number two with Breaking Bad at number four). Even NPR rated it highly at number two.
It doesn't stop there either. Mad Men also made The Los Angeles Times "2008 Image Index," The Detroit Press's "Most Compelling Flashback," and the Orlando Sentinel's "Great TV Performances on Cable" citing in particular Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks alongside Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston.
