betty-fashion.jpg

When we last spoke with Janie Bryant, the costume designer for Mad Men, she explained the show's obsession with underwear, clued us in on Joan and Peggy's favorite accessories and why it's OK to ruin a vintage dress. Today, we've got a new slew of fashion photos, along with her explanations. Come behind the seams as we see how the clothes make the Mad Men...

Wow - what great photos! I love the clothes so much on Mad Men and it is part of why I watch. Your comments on the clothes for the characters are very revealing. My favorite -the halter top evening dress Betty wore at the Stork Club. The second fave - the blue dress she wore (which has a matching coat, right?) the nite she found out about Bobby and Don. When she threw up in the Caddy, did anything get on her dress - I hope not!

My very very favorite dress is the one pictured above. This is the kind of dress I used to see in the windows of Bonwit-Teller or Saks Fifth Avenue or even at Macy's (on the square). I worked in the area at the same time line as this show and I have to compliment you for doing such a fine job researching just the right clothes for the gals. I couldn't agree more with Jamblermm above, I also initially became attracted to the show because of the clothes. It's still hard to believe you got it all so right!

On an episode of season one's DVD's the actors (in the voice overs) commented that the above dress on Betty was called "the clown dress". Well, I loved it and it would have something this gal would have dreamed of, it being way above my pay grade.

I do have one thing to say about the underwear though. You couldn't get me into a long line bra - my mother wore them. And I would have worn a garter belt not a girdle. I guess it depended on how a gal was stacked - I looked nothing like Joan. Lol. BTW, the long line bras had little tags that connected them to the girdle to avoid that annoying separation.

Stockings torn almost as soon as you put them on and buying new ones was a job in itself. Ohrbach's always had a sale and oh boy, talk about little riots at the sale counter. Stockings were sold in their little individual flat boxes wrapped in tissue paper, for less than .20 cents and I remember it well.

Again, many compliments to you for doing such a terrific job and every sceen is a true feast for the eyes and an amazing walk down memory lane for this viewer.

Now that Peggy fessed up to Pete, does anyone but me think that Pete will now try to track the baby down so he and Trudy can adopt it?

Couldn't agree with you more jb! He'll make Peggy's life miserable but how do you think he will explain it all to Trudy?

I can't imagine how in the world ol' slimy Pete will ever explain it to Trudy---but he won't be able to stop himself from tracking down his son, I feel sure.

Can't wait to see how Matt W. and Co. figures that one out!

I just had this conversation with my dtr! We are wondering if that baby in Peggy's mom's house is hers. I don't think so, but it could be. As for clothes, they are gorgeous. My favorite is the yellow bathing suit Betts wore one morning. And sorry, j, but she soiled that blue dress (my favorite). And Silverminx, I too remember getting those precious stockings in those thin boxes. It was very special, even then.

I love Joan's style, and was consequently so disappointed that they appeared to have denied us the opportunity to see what fashion choices she would have made in presenting herself as a bride!
