Season Two Finale Gets an "A" From Newsday; Other Papers Follow Suit

Newsday has given the Season 2 finale a top grade, saying, "This season, almost miraculously, has improved upon the Emmy-winning first, and this finale upon last year's memorable closer," while the Orlando Sentinel calls it "a sensational wrapup to another first-rate season." The season's penultimate episode, "The Mountain King," was declared "the best episode of the season, if not one of its best episodes ever" by the San Diego Union-Tribune, which added that the scene where Don tells Anna he's ruined his life was the "best, most vulnerable performance Jon Hamm has given all season."
Variety -- which calls Mad Men "the show that has captured the imagination of the country" -- interviews Matthew Weiner, who explains, "What I really wanted to show was how much (people from that era) are like us. How much their lives are like ours." He also cites Death of a Salesman as a major influence: "just read the play and you're like 'This is it. This is everything. This is the truth about human behavior.'" January Jones tells the New York Post she's had trouble finding a movie for the hiatus that's "on a par with Mad Men. I've been getting a lot of offers for sad wives." In an interview with The Washington Post, Bryan Batt says Kurt coming out of the closet "pushes Sal deeper down in when he sees his co-workers' reaction to it."
In a measure of Mad Men's influence on pop culture, the New York Post reports that The Simpsons will spoof the show in a Halloween episode airing Sunday, November 2. The segment will re-create the opening title sequence, with a silhouetted Homer Simpson in freefall instead of Don Draper. In the same vein, the Associated Press highlights the show's influence: "The TV drama unquestionably is all the rage."
