With Emmys Nearing, Attention Gets Paid to John Slattery and January Jones

This week, the press spotlight was on John Slattery, nominated for best supporting actor. In USA Today, he confirms that he originally wanted to play Don Draper. "Who wouldn't?" he asks. "James Bond would want the role of Don Draper." Slattery also participated in a Newsweek Emmy roundtable, where he revealed, "I don't think my agent wanted me to do this show...but I thought, 'I don't care.'" TV Guide also gives Mad Men some love, with cheers to January Jones "for her deceptively complex performance on Mad Men... Her portrayal has only grown subtler in the sublime AMC drama's second season." Critic Matt Roush praises the show as "a work of art, something transcending mere TV" and says it's "firing on all cylinders midway through its second season."

The drama's influence has officially extended to the runway again, with Michael Kors' show at New York's Fashion Week crossing "his Mad Men obsession with '80s sport chic," according to the New York Post, which cites as an example a "full-skirted red-and-white picnic dress that could have walked off" the series. Meanwhile, the kerfuffle over Twitter (where more than fifteen Mad Men characters appear on the social messaging website) gets more coverage, this time from Business Week. The situation is "blurring the lines between brand infringement and brand extension," and the founder of a social-media strategy firm advises companies to "embrace fan participation as long as it's not harming the brand," the magazine reports. I'm so glad that January Jones was nominated. Many people that post on the public site think that her acting is wooden (actually, I think most of those posters are so into fantasizing about Don that they hate Betty and therefore Ms. Jones!). I think her acting is quite subtle and is getting ever more nuanced. I loved her flirtation with the idea of prostituting herself with the car mechanic and thought that scene was amazing.
