It's official. Mad Men is the best drama on television. The show won an Emmy saying as much, in the process beating out contenders Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, House and Lost. Creator Matthew Weiner got his own statuette as well for Best Writing, Drama Series for the pilot "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."  (The Best Actor, Drama award went to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad.) Four other Emmys were awarded to Mad Men as part of the Creative Arts Prime Time Emmys last weekend, giving the series a grand total of six Emmys. The other awards were as follows...

The episode "Shoot" won an Emmy for Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series; the pilot episode "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" won an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series. The series also won for Outstanding Main Title Design (click here for interview), and Outstanding Cinematography for a One-Hour Series (also in relationship to the pilot episode). Congratulations!!!!!!

Sooooo happy it won!!! We've known it was the best right from the start...now the rest of the world knows!

You guys are taking over! With your brilliantly crafted shows and excellent lineup of movies AMC is definitely my new favourite channel. Congrats!

P.S. John Hamm is a hottie

Love the show. Sorry John H. we'll get it next year. I was hoping you would win, because your character is one of the best I've seen in years. But congrats to all for the Oustanding Drama Win! You are all great!

Congratulations on your 6 Emmys, especially for writing (pilot), opening credits sequence, best drama, cinematography and hairstyling.

I'm really bummed that Jon Hamm and John Slattery didn't win, but Bryan Cranston was exceptional in "Breaking Bad", too - in case anyone hasn't caught that show.

I guess the great consolation is that it's a win for AMC for another series which is fantastic! Gives AMC some clout to continue with original series tv programming and development, and to lure in the advertising sponsors and dollars. It's no longer a one-shot deal for them. Quite a coup to have two series win awards in their first outing!

......Congratulations - Emmy history!

I haven't been this excited for the Emmys in a while - and it was mostly because of Mad Men! I've never felt so invested in seeing a show win, but every aspect of Mad Men deserves to win awards. The writing is brilliant, the acting is so nuanced and spot-on, the sets and costumes are perfect, the camera work is gorgeous, the editing is so thoughtful ... just the entire package. Thanks to Matthew Weiner and all of the cast and crew for giving us something to look forward to every week - and an insightful look at the social currents of a time that at least some of us never experienced for ourselves. I tell everyone I know about the show, and I've been passing around the Season 1 DVDs. Everyone falls in love!

Did everyone notice that no matter what Category MM was competing in, it caused the most excitement when it was mentioned? Even when it didn't win its category, it got the most clamor and applause just hearing the words MadMen announced. Pretty cool.

Mad Men may be he most important American cultural statement since the early work of Bob Dylan. The award should ensure that its ideas will be fully devloped - and heard.

user-pic

I figured Jon Hamm & John Slattery winning were long shots cause they're "newcomers" but it was great to even get a nomination and at least win Best Drama for sure!! It was a wonderful nod to the excellence of this show and especially its cast!! Keep it up MM!! We love you and will continue to watch & campaign for you!!

user-pic

Yay, DM, it is indeed "Emmy History" Whoopeeee!
Laurie B., I surely did notice all that noise when MM was announced/mentioned...like they say.... "the little cable show that could"--- and man has it EVER! Soooooo great.

user-pic

I am so happy about this! Mad Men should be able to stick around for a few more years.

user-pic

Very Happy. It's so rare to see something to intelligent, in depth and something that simply allows your mind to work as you watch. Everything from the subtleties in the performers to way the show is shot, often with draper shot in an upwards angle denoting the alpha male status and the rigid horizontal and vertical visuals of the environment, all together makes it probably the best art i've seen on television. Way to go cast and crew, you all deserved every award. At 5 minutes to 5, have a drink with us all, Campbell's buying.

I am so happy about the wins last night. I'm sad that Jon Hamm did not win best actor in a drama but he will next year! He is a fine actor. One of the best I've ever seen. I've never watched the Emmy's before but last night I dropped everything to see Mad Men's wins. The writing of the show is amazing. The costume design is so good. The characters are deep and they make you think. I don't think enough credit is given to the actors. They work very hard mastering these deep and curious indiviuals. Finally a show that my husband and I love to watch together!

I yelled and screamed when MM won "Best Drama". So exciting! And well-earned.

I'm SO EXCITED Mad Men got the attention it deserved!

Also, I'm going to see Betty (January Jones) on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show tonight! I just called and got FREE TICKETS! 1-866-JIMMY TIX. They still have some available, so if you're in the LA Area, YOU SHOULD TRY TO CHECK HER OUT and show your support!!!!

user-pic

Yes, I was SO happy they got Best Drama - the writing and acting warrants it! I'd be so disappointed if this was not on next year. It's just so interesting, and really an analytical "thinking" game about second-guessing the characters' and their actions. I love it! Hopefully, our obsessive analyzing/discussion of the series helps with AMC's decisions regarding MadMen.

The internet certainly must help shows that don't fit the mold/are on the fence in ratings compared to the yesteryear of letter-writing to keep a show on.

Compared to the junk (reality/game shows) on the 3 networks these days (NBC, ABC, CBS), this is a welcome haven for viewing! Next up will be AMC's remake of "The Prisoner" from the 60s, one of my favorites! That one ought to be quite interesting!

Congratulations to everyone at Mad Men and AMC for receiving such a great recognition. I am sure you will now get millions of more viewers to see this great show which is truly remarkable in every I repeat EVERY department.

I too was hoping that both John H and John S would be the winners but i'm happy that they all won as an ensemble.

Matthew Weiner, you are simply the BEST! Despite being such a great writer and director, you seem to be a down-to-earth man (from what i've gathered in the behind the scenes specials). I hope you and your terrific writing team will continue to enamour us.

Also, just wanted to make a quick suggestion that it would be nice to see more of Pete Campbell and Trudie in the upcoming episodes.

Thank you thank you thank you for bringing Good TV back!!!!

I sat through an insufferably long and miserable Emmy show for one reason - to see this show make history!!!!! Glory Hallelujah, it did. CONGRATS to Matt et al for your notable wins. I'm just sad it wasn't a clean sweep because every category deserved the same celebration of acknowledgement. MAD MEN truly continues to exceed my expecations week after week.

I'm also sad that the females of the cast did not at least get nominated. Betty, Joan, Peggy, Midge, Rachel - there are few roles written on television with such sophistication and played with such nuance.

Keep up the good work - you have us hooked!

Congratulations to cast, writers and crew of Mad Men. This is the best show on TV.

Mad Men has completely allieviated my Deadwood and Soprano withdrawls.

I constantly recommend this show to friends. It will eventually have more sound ratings. AMC needs to get on the ball and promote this show more. Other programs are promoted on network channels all the time. AMC needs to step up more, and advertise. Viewers will flock once they realize how fanastic Mad Men really is.

It's true! It's true! The crown has made it clear.
The climate must be perfect all the year.

A law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August cannot be too hot.
And there's a legal limit to the snow here
In Camelot.
The winter is forbidden till December
And exits March the second on the dot.
By order, summer lingers through September
In Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Camelot, Camelot
That's how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.

Camelot! Camelot!
I know it gives a person pause,
But in Camelot, Camelot
Those are the legal laws.
The snow may never slush upon the hillside.
By nine p.m. the moonlight must appear.
In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.

Congratulations to each of you for your outstanding contribution to your art.
