TVWeek Calls Emmy a Watershed; Glenn Close Bestows Honor, Too
It was a "watershed moment for scripted cable," TVWeek wrote, when Mad Men became the first basic-cable show to win an Emmy for best drama last weekend, earning what CNN called "traditionally the biggest award of the night." AMC general manager and executive vice-president Charlie Collier said, "The recognition AMC received on Sunday night from the industry is truly historic. To be the first cable network ever to win the Emmy for best drama is an incredible honor."
"It was basic-cable shows like Mad Men and FX's Damages that stole the buzz" at the ceremony, Broadcasting & Cable noted. AMC took home eight awards in all -- six for Mad Men and two (including best actor) for Breaking Bad. Five-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close, who won the best actress Emmy for her role on Damages, said, "It's an honor to be nominated with Mad Men as one of the first two basic-cable series." Creator Matthew Weiner said, "We are glad we were not prejudiced against because we were on basic cable."
The "dazzling" (Oakland Tribune), "sleek" (Associated Press), and "stylish" (TV Guide) advertising drama also took home Emmys for best writing, outstanding hairstyling for a single-camera series, outstanding art direction for a single-camera series, outstanding main-title design, and outstanding cinematography for a one-hour series.
Even though he lost the best actor statue to Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, Jon Hamm noted after the ceremony, "You dream about getting to play something this rich and layered and beautiful and sad."
