Orlando Sentinel, Newsday Applaud Season 2

betty-and-francine.gifMad Men -- which doubled its viewership from last year in the season two premiere -- has been anointed as the "rare series that lives up to the advertising hype," according to the Orlando Sentinel, which lauds the Emmy-nominated drama for its "thoughtful writing, subtle acting and first-rate production values." Newsday declares the second season opener as "a perfect episode" from "the great new series of American television."

Critics talk about Mad Men as a different kind of television show, with The Star-Ledger praising the drama's "very classical storytelling style, eschewing quick cuts and busy plots in favor of a leisurely pace that wouldn't seem inappropriate in a film from 1962." Mad Men's depiction of its time is discussed too. "It's 1962 and the wave of social change is knocking on his [Don Draper's] door. This is fun for viewers because we know he's running out of time and we can't wait to see what he does about it," notes The Detroit News.

The women of the show get some well-deserved attention, with the Daily News saying Mad Men "provides an opportunity for its three pivotal females to address the slowly changing mores of the time." Elisabeth Moss (Peggy Olson) is the focus of a New York Post article that highlights how "Peggy's similarity with Draper will be a lot more apparent" this season. Meanwhile, the New York Post talks about season two delving into Betty Draper's "increasing desperation about her husband and her own identity" and applauds how "there's more subtext going on between [Jon Hamm, as Don, and January Jones, as Betty] than married couples on half a dozen other television shows."
