Mad Men and Obama in NY Times, plus Boston Globe, TV Guide

The choicest tidbit in this week's press? The revelation that Barack Obama had a Mad Men DVD on the side table of his campaign plane, according to a cover story in the New York Times Magazine.

Also this week, the Boston Globe has a Q&A with Debbie Zoller, Mad Men's makeup department head. She loves it when people "ask things like what's the lipstick you're using on Joan or Betty, because they want to wear that lipstick." And with fall fashion turning towards retro-femininity, Zoller, who's up for two Emmys, believes makeup trends will follow suit: "I do see a lot of matte lipsticks and people wanting more color versus glosses."

TV Guide interviews John Slattery, who says "there's not one thing about [Roger Sterling] I don't like." When asked what he likes most about him, he replies, "He sees the humor in a lot of what goes on, which is pretty dark." Slattery was featured too in a Good Morning America segment along with Matthew Weiner, Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks.

It's known as "Mad-vertising," Variety declares. That's when a blurb (example: "Heineken was the first imported beer in America after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933") appears on-screen against a backdrop from Mad Men's title sequence -- and is immediately followed by a related commercial, such as a spot for Heineken. The strategy keeps viewers from fast-forwarding through the ads. "You're not blowing through the commercial. You're thinking, 'What's going on here?'" says Linda Schupack, AMC's Senior Vice President of Marketing.
