Q&A - Christina Hendricks (Joan Holloway)
Christina Hendricks, a.k.a. office manager Joan Holloway, discusses the bright side of office politics and taking fashion cues from a squirrel in AMCtv.com's exclusive interview.
Q: In Season 1, your character lives with a lesbian and is the other woman in an extramarital affair? How much do you think societal taboos have changed since the 1960s?
A: I don't think anyone blinks an eye or cares about homosexuality these days, do they? And as far as being the other woman in an affair, I think that's been happening since humans were put on this earth. It keeps happening. It brings a lot of sadness and sorrow to relationships, but at the same time, it doesn't seem to be stopping.
Q: How has the show changed the way you look at office politics?
A: I don't work in an office, but acting is still a business, and I think the entertainment industry probably allows for a lot more inappropriate behavior than most offices. We use what we have in the office to get what we want. And that doesn't always have to be a bad thing.
Q: Joan and Peggy have a different dynamic this season. Do you miss their old relationship?
A: I don't get as many scenes with Elisabeth Moss this year, which I really miss. I love working with her. But, you know, she's rising to the top. She doesn't have time for me any more. She doesn't want to listen to me anyway. It's very disappointing -- I just never got through to her.
Q: Is there a favorite scene you've done so far this season?
A: I really did like that scene with Paul at his party. I thought it was very different from the stuff that I had done last year. Paul and Joan did have a relationship, and I think they're closer than a lot of people. So she can call him on his stuff. And Paul with his little kerchief, his sad little kerchief. My God, bless his heart. He was just cracking me up with that attitude.
Q: Can you describe Joan's personal style?
A: I think Joan is definitely current in her style and reads her fashion magazines -- she stays on top of it. But, she also knows what works for her so she doesn't go too into trends. She's probably one of those women that ten years down the road will still be wearing the same outfit.
Q:Is there a favorite outfit you've worn so far this season?
A: There's this little tight brown dress I wore in Episode 1 -- and I've worn it again since then -- that reminds me of a Chip and Dale squirrel from the cartoon. We call it the naked squirrel dress because it's so skintight I look naked, but it also looks like a squirrel. There was a naked mouse outfit last year. We're going through all the rodents, I guess.

Joan, we love you. My sister and I are totally straight but we can't take our eyes off your fabulous body! You are stealing the show with every move and every look you do! Keep up the great fun, darling.
pegster, me too! I'm straight and married 32 years (the 21st of this mo). But...I have a "girl crush" on Joan! I love her voluptuousness and femininity (sp?) Her skin looks like the peaches and cream in Heaven must look!
Yes, beautiful complexion and darling dimples. BTW I'm straight too!
If you don't mind a personal question- are those all Joan's curves or do they add some pad. A true hour glass figure like Joan's is very rare.
Well, flowerpower, I have seen pics of her on Google and also the black dress (in the Roger's heart attack epi)--where her "girls" were spilling up and over the top of it! And she looked authentic-- at least up top. They "shook" normally when she walked like natural boobs do when she got off the elevator to type up the stuff for Bert---ever notice that when say someone like Pamela Anderson walks "they" just do not bounce at all...too heavy and full of plastic to even move inside the skin like basketballs crammed inside there! Ugh! She (Christina) of course could be padded at the hips to balance it all. Who knows? She looks fantastic.
My husband and my 19-year old son LOVE Joan because she's curvaceous and "all-girl". My husband was in college during 1965 (he's 12 years older than me) so I wasn't surprised by his reaction. But my son's reaction was a big surprise: "The women on 'Mad Men' have great curves and they dress like women... not like the girls today who either show way too much, or dress like boys. Bring back the old days!" I wonder how many other young men feel this way?!
Christina: You are fabulous. My daughter, mother, and I consider your attire and overall style to be the height of fashion. I predict that you will be a new fashion trend. Great work!
Christina, love your Joan character! She is so cool and self-assured in all situations. I like I have a little girl crush on her - I'm straight, but I wish I had been like Joan when I was that age. I did work in offices and this show is an accurate portrayal of the 1960s male-female dynamics.
Everybody knows that the executive secretary is the most powerful person in any company. Joan Holloway is the power center of Sterling-Cooper and personifies the most visible aspect of leadership at that company.
Joan Holloway has always had my vote as the hottest gal on the show! Not only is she gorgeous, but the attitude… Pow… makes me melt. Christina plays that part so perfectly—hiding all of that business intelligence in a form-factor that’s otherwise easy to discount. She maintains that ideal balance between sweetness, assertiveness and dare I say it, cruelty. Christina is a truly talented individual that goes beyond the script. Well done!
I do hope that hand knit (by Christina) scarf for charity offer on eBay is genuine—I just won it.
GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY.....FROM EVERYTHING I HAVE READ (AND EVEN FROM WHAT I WROTE/ COMMENTED UPON, EARLIER THIS EVE. IN RESPONSE TO MR.MORSES' INTERVIEW)......I THINK EVERY ONE OF US WOMEN WHO WROTE A COMMENT ONTO THIS "BLOG / FORUM", AND ARE "STRAIGHT", STILL HAVE MANAGED TO HAVE A "GIRL-CRUSH" ON THE FABULOUS MISS HENDRICKS !!!!!!......I THINK SHE HAS STARTED A NEW TREND / TIDAL WAVE OF ADMIRATION ACROSS AMERICA.....THAT, OR WE ALL ARE GOING TO HAVE TO "GO GAY" !!!!!!!.......LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HER !!!!!!!!
Ditto on the comments about Joan!! She is fantastic and we love how she's fearless towards everyone! She's been so strong since episode 1 through now!! It will definitely be interesting to see what happens between her and Jane Siegel - Don's secretary!! The last episode was priceless with the two of them facing off!! She's gotta kick some Roger Sterling butt for bringing Jane back after Joan fired her!! Can't wait!!
YOU GO CHRISTINA!! KEEP UP THE AWESOME JOB!! WE LOVE YOU!!
In one of the episodes the Mad Men say, "Every woman wants to be Jackie or Marilyn". Christina, you've made us all want to be Joan. We're going to strangle Weiner if you don't get your script reading job back! I was a young woman in business in the early 1960s. "Sex and the Single Girl" (1962) was my Bible -- and Helen Gurley Brown told us things our mothers' never could. (I hope someone on the staff can get a first edition, which had little to do with sex -- all about style and how to get ahead.) Christina/Joan, you have won our hearts, not by what you say, but by how you act. You're the new Helen 50 years later. Could anyone have guessed you'd be stealing the show from Jon Hamm, who drove us wild the first season? (Okay, so we're still in love with that bad boy -- but someone better soften him up. We're losing patience with him, just like his wife.) Christina, we adore you. You are the way we wish we could be...today.
Hey Christina--Are you the girl in the Delta Airlines in-flight safety film? My husband and I both wondered...and we never see eye-to-eye on anything. Can't wait for next season...hoping you dump that jerk and move on up.
Why, why, why, why, WHY do they not write more of her into the show? Why, why, why, why why?
Sigh.
She is such a strong actor. It's so fun to watch her layered work. There is SO much going on within her in every scene.
Brilliant.
You burn up the screen!
Men like a woman with curves, and Christina Hendricks certainly has curves. The sexy redhead who plays Joan Holloway on AMC's hit show Mad Men has gained a place in the hearts of American men alongside other beautiful full-bodied women like Susan Sarandon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Lynda Carter.
